John's Story
Life
Shelley Wing (Corunna '84) and I married and have a pretty big family in today's standard -- four childern. Two boys and two girls -- (17,12,11,9) We've lived a few different places; Virginia, Louisiana, back to Michigan and back to Virginia 5 years ago, we have established some pretty deep roots here, and it feels like home. We like being close to the ocean and North Carolina beaches, the mountains, and Washington DC. Always use a pencil in your address book if you note our address. Overall, we are a pretty typical active family. Shelley has the joy of staying home to help our kids stay focused and do well. She stays active in volunteering in our community and schools. I graduated from FSU with a degree in Healthcare Administration. I work for Universal Health Services, Inc. (based out of Philadelphia) as a Corporate Director of Finance. I spend my life making sure hospitals can create a positive cash flow to buy all of the latest and greatest "toys" the clinical people want. I enjoy my work, Shelley would tell you I am a workaholic. High School was okay, but I really loved college life and sometimes wish I could go back. Our oldest son has a band through a youth group at a church, #2 is a football player, and our daughters spend their lives in cheerleading, dance and skating. Our kids are involved in a lot more than we ever were and keep us very busy 7 days a week. My parents retired to Arizona and all of my siblings except one left Michigan so we don't get back often. Shelley's Dad and sister Doreen both live in Owosso, but the rest of her family is also in Arizona. We had a blast at the 20 year reunion! Hope everyone is as happy an...Expand for more
d healthy as we are!
College
I graduated from Ferris State University in Health Care Administration. Ferris was a great time of my life, I look forward to my kids attending college and my parent weekends. I use my degree, and cannot imagine working in anything other than healthcare.
Workplace
I have worked for HCA most of my career, started in January of 1991 in Northern Virginia, promoted to Richmond in 1993, promoted to Lafayette LA in 1994, left the company in November of 1996, relocated to Michigan, worked for Mercy Health Services in Farmington and Botsford Healthcare in Farmington Hills from 1996 - 2000. Returned to HCA in 2000 as the Chief Operating Officer of Financial Services in the Central Atlantic Division. My responsibilities are the 22 hospitals HCA owns in Virginia, West VA, and New Hampshire.
We live in Richmond, it is a quick drive to Washington DC, Virginia Beach and the Outer Banks! In May of 2004, Universal Health Services recrutited me away from HCA. A MAJOR change for me, as they were my family. Although they are based in Philly, they allowed me to create a new Fiscal Services operation in Richmond, whereby we consolidate the financial operations of hospitals throughout the chain to this location. It has been an awesome experience so far, as it is "my baby". I got to design and build it from start to finish. Several of my staff from HCA left and joined me, so other than the different company and facility locations, I have some of my peers from HCA with me now. The hospitals we manage so far, are one outside of Philadelphia, The George Washington University Hospital in DC, and soon 3 in the New Orleans Market.
