John's Story
Life
Born in Tennessee, and raised in NC on the Crystal Coast. Worked for Atlantic Beach, Emerald Isle and Pine Knoll Shores Police Departments. Joined the USAF in 1983 and retired in 2003. Missed law enforcement for over 20 years and decided to join up with the best...the Texas State Highway Patrol. Went through their six month academy (and it was a helluva lot harder than my years in the military!!) Survived and I am now a commissioned officer in the Texas State Highway Patrol, working in "the heart of Texas". Love the excitement....no boring office job for me!! College
Carteret Technical College 1978-1980. Lots of in-service schools at Salemburg Justice Academy. Took some time off from law enforcement to serve my country (20 years) and I'm finally back in it as a Texas State Trooper.
Workplace
142 of us (C-03)were selected out of 1200 applicants for the T...Expand for more
exas State Highway Patrol. 108 of us made it through and graduated. The average age of an applicant....24 years old. I consider myself fortunate to be selected at 43 and graduate at 44! Love the job, love the responsibility!! Can't imagine doing anything else! Stationed now in the Heart of Texas, Brady to be exact. Love drunk hunting and I consistantly lead the entire district in stops! I live in the country...got 2 acres front yard and about 4,000 in the back.....and except for the lawn it's all wooded. Tons of deer, bobcat, turkey, wild hogs, coyote and fox....even got a resident armadillo!
Military
Joined the USAF in 1983. Ellsworth AFB, South Dakota was my first duty station, spent two years there. Was selected for special duty and was assigned to RAF Fairford, England, where I stayed for over 13 years. The British are terrific people! Spent my last five years in Abilene, Texas, at Dyess AFB. Retired February 2003.
