John's Story
I attended Hiram Local School beginning with kindergarten in the fall 0f 1951 until we moved in January 1960 to Coshocton, Ohio. I would have been in the class of 1964. We lived in a two story house on Wakefield Road right behind Hurd's Sohio gas station. My sister Eleanor was two years behind me and my brother Billy was four years behind me. My father and his two sisters also attended school in Hiram. He was in the class of 1929. After graduation from high school, I attended college for two years and then six years in the United States Navy. After separation, I attended Georgia Tech where I received a master's degree in architecture. I am now a retired architect and presently live in Thomasville, Georgia with my wife, Lois, and daughter, Mary Eleanor. Our daughter, Mary Eleanor, "Meme" finished up her master's degree in museum management at Florida State University...Expand for more
and her internship at the Ringling Museum in Sarasota, Florida in May and is engaged to be married next May. I have fond memories of growing up in Hiram and Coshocton and can remember most of my classmates and teachers from that time. I have some of my class pictures from the fifties and sixties but not all. In Hiram, I remember Wednesday was hot dog day and going to pep rallies, sock hops and jean jumps in the gym. Also we had two plays that my class participated in which were performed on the stage at the far end of the gym: The Mikado and a version of Die Fledermaus. I think Mrs. Dreisbach directed both, We also had a school band which may have started when I was in seventh grade. In Coshocton, I remember so many things but especially following the band from the football field to the high school after home games and the magical way Main Street looked at Christmas.
