John's Story

Once upon a time... er ... In a Galaxy far far away...wait no... It was a dark and stormy night... :D After Graduating from Ringling I reluctantly did the big city thing, spent some time in Dallas and confirmed that it wasn't my cup of tea. After nearly a year of driving to work and being stuck behind the pimps in traffic and watching them dropping the working girls off, I said to myself, self what the Hale are you doing here? So like Old Jeb I packed up and moved and went to God's country, LA, not that pretender in California, but Lower Alabama, the Florida panhandle where I was raised; I could hunt, fish, or play golf if and when I wanted too. I discovered early in life that in spite of what most people think the pursuit of the almighty Dollar aint what brings me happiness. Even though the prospects of employment in aren't as great outside of the big city, there is far more to life then your job. I worked for awhile at Sign Company, hey it wasn't what I went to school for but it paid the bills, and I made some good friends and learned some things there, so I count it as a net plus. And litteraly on a dark and stormy night I had the pleasure of learning one of the greatest lessons in life there is, I faced the possibility of my immanent death in an automobile accident. It's a lesson we all learn, some through combat, some though health problems, and the unfortunate few through plain growing old. I say unfortunate because if one takes that route usually by the time they come to that conclusion most of their time on this earth is behind them, but I digress. I left the Sign Company for a job at a screenprinter, because it allowed me to do what I wanted, and since that time I haven't worked a day in my life, I was and am doing what I wanted, drawing, creating, or as my oldest daughter said in 1st grade when the teacher asked her what her father did for a living, she said my daddy colors all day. Out of the mouths of babes! After a year at the screenprint company, my life again took a change, one for the better, one day in walked Genie, and one look, for the lack of a better term, I was sm...Expand for more
itten I was toast, a goner. She came for a job interview, while being shown around the company. She walked over to my drawing table, a table that was covered with Playboys, Penthouses and other "girly magazines", reference for a job "Big Bertha's Bordello and Chilli Parlor". She stood there for few minutes unfazed looking over everything, taking everything in, then she asked in that sweet southern voice (that could melt a man's heart or steel his nerve to and give him the strength to kick down the very gates of Hale itself and announce to Satan "Here's Johnny and I"ll take your bet and you're going to regret I'm the best there's ever been".) What I was drawing and why I had so many different pictures all over my desk? I explained that was taking pieces, parts from each of them, this one's eye, this one's legs, this one's hips, this one's hands. She replied "I can see that", then she asked about why I had chosen this one's eyes over, that ones. After enduring my explanations, She smiled a smile that can light up a room, turned and walked away giving me a view that has been my great pleasure to have enjoyed from that day forward, and Lord willing will enjoy until my last breath on this earth. After asking her out several times and being kicked in the head, She called me out of the blue and ask me out, which of course being the wise man I are, said sure we can do that. We got married six months later I had my lasso around this one... er...correction she ran under my clumsy thrown lasso. She brought me two daughters, while my genetic material may not course through their veins, they are my daughters. I am the man that for the rest of their lives they will compare all males too, do they stack up to Dad. An awesome responsibility, one that I hope and pray I have lived up too, it has and is a privilage to call both of them, Amanda and Meghan, daughter. Dad a word next to Husband is the greatest thing a man can be called. Since 1988 we have moved, and live in many different places, I have worked at many different screenprinters, but as I wrote earlier there is far more to life then your job.
