John's Story

Life I guess I did not fall far from the tree,I am now in Yukon Oklahoma. I have been with Dayton Tire for 24 years come this May 2002 I only went to John Marshal for a couple of weeks. Thus my memories of Herbie Hoover will always be a lot fresher. In 1975 I did a three year enlistment with the Army. Come this April my wife Pam and I will be celebrating our 20th Anniversary, We will be Flying to Charleston, South Carolina. She wants to see the ocean. We have two children a boy 18 and a girl that be 15 soon. Hey folks, I still have my 1972 GreenTalon yearbook So if anyone is interested in an old pic of themselves he, he, You can either email me or call I am in the book. John Helms Workplace Gosh 24, almost 25, years at Dayton Tire? The only other job that I held for any length of time was the United States Army 3 years. I went to basic training at (Foggy Fort) Ord California the summer of 1975. Our company was called A63. We were on the hill. I also took my (AIT) or advanced individual training there as well to become a 36K20 or AKA Field wireman or telephone installer in the field. In a class of about 60 I finished 2nd. About half of my fellow recruits washed before even getting to the pole orchard. At the pole orchards we lost at least 10 more. So only about 20 of us even finished the class. w times but I did not give up. My reasoning was that I had to make good in order to get my promised stationing at Fort Sill Oklahoma. At Fort Sill I took advantage of any and all Educational opportunities. Six weeks of GED Prep school. This allowed me to pass the GED. soon after I took a starter, carburetor and alternator rebuild course. Next I went to Wheel alignment and brake repair. I soon had my eyes on yet another class auto body, but was told I could not attend anymore since some of my contemporaries had not been to any schools at all. It was then only a few weeks later while in formation they were looking for volunteers to go to BLS or Basic Leadership School. Guess what this was refereed to as 2 more weeks of Basic training all over, and guess what? NO body wanted to volunteer. NO BODY? OK, you guessed it. I volunteered with one caveat. This allowed me to go to auto body. The class was not as good as I had hoped for but I got what I wanted anyway. I guess you could call it " The Art of the Deal". My goal at the time was to become something in the auto repair field. However, once I found out the pay was better a the Dayton Tire factory the rest was history. The ability to keep repairing the old vehicles I drive has paid off though. Since I do 98% of the work myself. This has given me a strange kinship with Sam Walton.
