John's Story

After graduating from the eigth grade St. Andrews School, I entered the minor seminary of the Franciscans of the Third Order Regular. I was given the religious name of Terence, in 1967, when I became a novice. I made my first profession of vows in 1968. and was ordained to the priesthood in 1976 and celebrated my first Mass at St. Andrews. I taught history at Bishop Egan High School, first during an apostolic year in 1971-72 and after ordination from 1976 to 1992. I have always had a passion for history and have been a strong advocate of it being restored to its rightful place in our schools. I love poetry, particularily poems that tell a story or celebrate America. I became the last Principal of Bishop Egan High School in Bucks County, Pa., and the first President of Conwell-Egan Catholic High School (1992-96). In 1996, I was appointed by the Province of the Sacred Heart to be the Director of Postulants (first year seminarians) in Loretto, Pa, and became a Vice President at St. Francis University shortly afterewards. I have served the Province of the Sacred Heart in the capacity of Vicar Provincial 2004-08. In 2000, I was elected President of Franciscan University of Steubenville and am still serving in that capacity. Franciscan University is playin...Expand for more
g a vital role in the renewal of the Catholic Church in the United States and in many parts of the world. During the last 30 years, the University has sent on to the priesthood over 400 men. I love to hike and every summer head to a National Park with a group of grads from Franciscan University and Bishop Egan. In the course of hiking, although not a technical climber, I have summited in Yosemite:Half Dome 3x, Mt. Hoffman 3x, and Mt Dana - 13, 252 ft. My longest hike was 51 miles in one day (in 1968). I have climbed The Pinnicle in the Grand Tetons and Mt. Washburn in Yellowstone. My favorite National Park is Yosemite. My favorite trails are the Panorama Trail in Yosemite, The Highline Trail in Glacier, and the trails leading out from Hurricaine Ridge-Obstruction Point in Olympic National Park. In 2012, I hope to do a rim to the river trail in the Grand Canyon and ascend back up on a different trail. I consider my life to be an adventure and am deeply grateful to God for his providential care and blessings. I am grateful to the Sisters of St. Joseph for teaching me in grade school, and I hope all of our St. Andrews grads are honoring them as they make their pilgrim way toward our heavenly home. Fr.
