John's Story
Well here it is: With a hello to anyone reading this:
(in installments)
1964-graduated from DJO and started Chemical engineering at Northeastern Univ. in Boston. Also moved to Boston area as my Father retired from the Navy and started working up there.
1966-Shifted major to a Business and had co-op jobs with Mass. Dept of Public Safety and also with Honeywell Corp.
1968-As NU is a 5 year program, my good old draft board in Virginia said "A trip to Southeast Asia, Deal or No Deal". I said "No Deal" and joined the Navy for Nuclear Submarines instead. They don't too often shoot at subs.
1969-70-Boot camp and various schools in the Navy.
1971-75-Served on USS Sea Devil SSN-664. Fun for a few years when you are in your twenties. Read "Blind Man's Bluff" for a good description of what nuclear-subs did during the cold war. Have been to four reunions for the Sea Devil, great times and lots of sea stories. Another one coming up next year.
1975-80-Went back to Northeastern for a BS in Business (Marketing and Management) and an MBA also. During this time, I went to work for IBM-Finland in Helsinki for a six month internship. Great place. I met my future wife, Liisa and married in 1980; what more can I say (32 years this year).
1981-Due to the shi... economy, couldn't find a job in the Boston area, so took a job with the navy as a civilian at the Norfolk Naval Shipyard in Virginia and we moved to Virginia Beach. (turned out to ...Expand for more
be a good move after all)
1981-2002-Worked in Nuclear Engineering, Radiological Controls, and Environmental Health (Mixed Material) departments. Various engineering, instrumentation, and IT work. Mainly fun at the time.
1982-1987-Went to Old Dominion at night for a BS in Mechanical Engineering.
1988-1996-Went to Old Dominion at night for a PhD in Engineering Management. Course work took about 2 years, played around 3 years trying to decide upon my dissertation topic and then did my research, wrote and defended my dissertation during the last 3 years. During this same time, Liisa was working on her PhD in Engineering Management also. The last year was crazy, we had to buy another PC as the both of us each needed a PC for writing our dissertations. I used Word Perfect and she used MS-Word. I had to learn Word to help her with tables and some of her statistical analysis and in turn, she proof-read and helped me with some sticky points of grammar.
will continue later with "The topic of my PhD and more".
My PhD dissertation was "An artificial life model of engineering attrition contemplation: Why do federally employed civilian engineers think of quitting." 275 pages, even today I still don't see how I was able to do that while working full time. I must have been nuts! No plans of doing anything with my degree at the time, but later on it turned out to be a great investment. I did get a lot of self satisfaction from it.
