John's Story
Well, I was one of those back in school that most had pigeonholed into the "pathetic geek" category before the contact lenses and the guitar came along. lol Funny how just a couple of small changes can make tons of difference, though. More popular in places like Lordstown, Cortland, Champion, Howland, and Niles for sure, but I didn't mind that very much. Keeping that wild side everyone got to see on Senior Skip Day hidden from my parents as long as possible was important to me. The first time they caught me drunk, I was already legal. lol The Summers in Ocean City, MD and Clearwater, FL were what I looked forward to more than anything else all year long, but the occasional jamming with a few garage bands after school (shout-outs to old bandmates Rob from Howland, Ronnie, Chris, & Bobby from Lakeview, John from WWR, and R.I.P. Johnny & Dave) was pretty epic. Anybody else remember that place on 422 where damn near anyone could buy a 6-pack and they only carded for a 12-pack or more? There was a place on Elm. Rd. that had the same policy, too. I'm half wondering now if anyone ever dug up that foam cooler some friends buried in the woods back behind Lincoln. The Beer Tent wasn't the only place at St. Dimitrios Festival to get a cold beer during the Festival back then. lol
Then there was Kent State, and I briefly considered settling permanently in the Akron / Kent area. After I got my Bachelor's Degree in '87, I went back to get the first year of the Maste...Expand for more
r's Degree program out of the way, funded by a Graduate Assistantship which was basically a part-time Faculty position with full Tuition included. That wild side that I managed to hide pretty well (until Senior Skip Day) eventually came back to bite me, so I left academic life when I learned I was about to become a father. By my son's first birthday, I had a shared-custody agreement with my ex, so I decided to settle down considerably. By the time I got full custody of my son just before he started preschool at age 4, I had totally outgrown getting falling-down drunk. Granted, I never took my partying past the "weekend warrior" level and I averaged 50-hour work weeks back at the peak of working for some of the Delphi / Packard subcontractors.
Father of one, stepfather of two, widowed at age 37 (R.I.P. Jan, 1961-2003), and Grandpa to one. My career path led from "serial Temporary jobs" in Industrial Electronics and TV / VCR Repair in the last years of Manufacturing and Repair being viable career fields, then on to Supervision / Management / Administration in the Telecom Customer Service field as a stepping stone to turning a lifelong interest in Antique / Vintage / Collectible electronics into a career with much help and moral support from Jan and a team of three highly-skilled Specialists working for me now. October of 2017 was the 16th Anniversary of my company that can be visited at tubetvshop.com on the Web. That's the "Condensed Version" of the story.
