John's Story

Life My life has taken a lot of interesting twists. I was Honorably discharged from the Navy in 1972 with the rank of E-5. During my last year in the service I joined the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. Following military service I went home to Ventura California where I started school at the local community college, finishing up my degree in special education at Brigham Young University in Provo Utah. I have been teaching Jr High Special Ed. students for the past 18 years here in Salt Lake City where I live with my wonderful Wife Teresa and our four children, three of which are grown. Before moving to Utah in 1991, I taught for six years for Ventura College and then for another five and a half years, my wife and I managed a ski lodge in Big Bear California. (We did that on a whim and wound up loving it, the people, the location and opportunities Big Bear had to offer.) While living in California all those years I surfed and scuba dived quite a bit and now miss the ocean. In addition to my tea...Expand for more
ching Jr. high students, I am a professional artist and do it full time in the summers along with teaching workshops in Utah and Wyoming. You can view some of my work at johnhughesstudio.com. I am still very active and do a lot of hiking in the mountains to paint studies on location for larger studio pieces. I am having a great time painting and occasionally fly fishing at this stage of my life. My family is great and I enjoy doing lots of fun things with them like camping, playing guitar with my 2 sons (The girls havn't taken an interest in that) and traveling. Life is good! John- Update: I retired from full time teaching in 2016 and now pursue my art career full time. I still teach a landscape painting class at Salt Lake Community College one afternoon a week and teach painting workshops on occasion. If you are ever in Jackson Hole Wyoming you can view my work in Mountain Trails Gallery. In Park City Utah at Montgomery Lee Fine Art and in Salt Lake City in Trolley Art and Antique down at Trolley Square.

This is Old Park City, the way it used to be. These buildings no longer exist, but there’s still a lot of charm up there! 8 x 10 oil
I made an unexpected trip up the canyon this afternoon for some emotional and spiritual rejuvenation. The canyon never fails to deliver. It was also fun to see some of the Intermountain Society of Artists painting by the si

We had a nice rainstorm last night to relieve all of the heat. I drove up the Cottonwoods this morning to capture a peaceful mood and some cool air. Was not disappointed in the solitude and beauty! 8 x 10 oil
