John's Story

After highschool I took a year off. In 1988 I started attending the University of Toledo. I did great in history but totally bombed geology. Maybe I wasn't ready for college. I continued to work as a waiter and bartender instead. However, in the fall of '95 I returned to UT to pursue a degree in History. My goal, as stated above, was to become a history teacher. Nevertheless, I recall that I was just coasting by in my ethics class. One day my teacher called on me to answer a question about the material. I hadn't read it and I was called out for it. It was an embarrassing, life changing moment. From that day forward I read all of the material moved to the front of the class and participated in all of the class discussions. That moment made me a better student. My GPA began to climb as I started to shed my slacker attitude. After that quarter was over I quickly adjusted my major to philosophy. Two more years went by and I saw my grades improve. I had just completed my junior year at UT but I had a couple of crucial decisions to make. My first decision was to ask my long-time girlfriend, Amy to marry me. She said yes, luckily. As we prepared for our wedding and our lives together we started to examine what we were doing with our lives. Philosophy certainly wasn't going to pay the bills. She was student teaching but it wasn't working out for her. We both decided to take different paths. I was a...Expand for more
lways a solid artist with the pencil and brush. It made sense to try out graphic design. My friends Dave Graham (87) and Todd Matthews (89) were already attending class at Davis College. It was a small school and I liked the environment and staff there. After three years, in the summer of 2000, I received my Associates of Business (graphic design) from Davis College. When I graduated the economy was at a stand still. It was hard to find a job in my field. No problem. I just stayed in the service industry and did what I was already doing. It was still good money for the hours that I worked. Amy went back to school as well. She graduated with an associates in the health information technology field. She has done that ever since. When we were blessed with children it was time to make that second crucial decision. Although the economy was starting to show some signs of life we needed to make arrangements for child care. We decided that I would stay home with them while my wife continued to work at the hospital. Let's face it. Her health benefits are too good to pass up. I was making good money as a bartender and I still enjoyed it. That's the way it's been for the last six years. Soon our twins will be starting school and I can look forward to using my degree on a full time scale. Until then you can catch me up at Mancy's Italian in the evenings slinging drinks. Let me know what you've been up to.
