John's Story

Hi everyone, I married Frankie Haas, from Skaneateles, NY, June 16th, 1973. Frankie is originally from NY City, but moved to Central NY with her family when she was 15. I met her on June 19th, '71, while we were working for the same company in Syracuse. Our daughter Brandy came along Dec.10th, 1975. We just have the one child. Frankie did modeling at one time for Breck Shampoo. You may recall, the Breck Girls, had head shot portraits on the back covers of magazines, back in the day. She had two cover shots. We are living in Washington State now, we've been here since 1984. Frankie and I own a home in Kent, Washington, 18 miles south of the City of Seattle. Kent itself is a city of 136,000. Brandy lives about 5 miles from us, with her husband Jason, daughter Macie and son Bryson. Frankie was working for Girl Scouts at the time of our move and her job is why we relocated to the Seattle area. I went back to college when we moved here, and after graduation I started working in the Anesthesia Dept., at Providence Medical Center in Seattle. I was there a couple years, then went on to The University of Washington Medical Center in Seattle. There, I was the Cardio-thoracic Anesthesia Technical Coordinator, and Teaching Adjutant, working mostly in open heart surgery. I was also a member of the organ transplant team. U.W. is the major organ transplant center in the Pacific Northwest and was very busy, with 35 O.R.'s. I was with the University for nearly 18 years, averaging 60 hours a week, plus I took a lot of call. When on call, chances were strong that I was back at the hospital working all night long. When taking call weekends, I was at the hospital all weekend. I needed to get out of that rat race and I also needed a life. I was recruited to join the Anesthesia staff at Evergreen Medical Center in Kirkland, WA., April of 2005. There I got more money, less call, and I didn't have to pay $1,200 a year, to park my vehicle. But working in that environment isn't for older people and my reaction time had slowed, so I retired May 9th 2011. Frankie continued to work for Girl Scouts after we moved to Washington, holding several positions with them. She had been a Field Director, Product Sales Mgr. and the Adult Development Director. But it got so it ran her life, and after 13 years, she 'retired'. After taking a few years off from work, she was employed at Home Depot for some time at their training center, getting new hires from all the stores around this area, up to speed.. Frankie and Brandy started their own catering company, Down Home Catering, Frankie loved it, but it was hard, tiring work, putting in a lot of hours and they were extremely busy. So they sold the business and closed the doors April 30th, 2017. Frankie retired, but Brandy was head of the marketing department with a local firm and now is the office manager at a vetranary hospital, in Tacoma, WA. Down Home Catering had been voted as one of the top caterers in Western Washington, in KING-TV's (Seattle) 'Best of Western Washington' viewers poll, for several years, placing second one year.. They placed 1st in The Kent Reporter's 'Best Of Kent' poll, each year from 2010-'17, beating out some of the big boys in the business. Frankie is on the Board of Directors for Kent Downtown Partnership and Chairs the promotions department, she is a member of Kent's Historical Society. Frankie was also a member of the Kent Chamber of Commerce. Brandy is a member and former Secretary of the Meridian-Kent Kiwanis and now the immediate past President, she's a former member of KDP and the Kent Chamber of Commerce and is very active in her church. Brandy's daughter Macie, was born Friday, July 13th 2007, on her dad's birthday. (Friday the 13th, father Jason....YIKES!!) Bryson was born August 22nd, 2013. Both are a joy and we love being grand parents. Brandy used to do a lot of musical theater, before Macie came along, but she's too busy to perform these days. Brandy manages twq veterinary clinics in Lakewood, WA. Brandy's husband is in real estate. While at the University, I formed John June Ski Tours and used to organize ski trips for folks. We would go all over, including resorts such as, Whistler-Blackcomb, BC, Sun Peaks, BC, Silver Mountain, ID. Mt. Bachelor, OR., along with other resorts in British Columbia, Idaho, Oregon, Montana, Utah, Wyoming and Alberta, Canada. Of course I organized trips to resorts in Washington as well. I have gone skiing on my own to California and Colorado, since we moved west. I was also a part time alpine ski instructor for a few years. BUT, the old knees aren't what they used to be, so I hung up the ski boots and stopped doing the tour business. Besides, it costs too darn much to ski these days. Frankie and I do a lot of gardening, we are landscaping our yard ourselves. We have people stop by all the time, to comment on how much they like the front gardens and ask permission to take photos. The whole front yard is one huge garden, of five various themes. I once had 56 roses in my rose garden, but they are a lot of work and now have 13. I volunteer with The Seattle Thunderbirds Major Junior A Hockey Team, of the Western Hockey League. I go to rookie and training camps and write down evaluations of prospective players. Players are eligible to be drafted by NHL teams at age 17. So the quality of the games are at a very high level. their choice. So many, if they don't turn pro, go on and graduate from college. Even some who turn pro, take advantage of the scholarship and get their higher education in the off season. Most of the kids in the league are Canadian, but their are also several Americans. Each team is allowed two import players and the league holds an import draft every summer.. Players stay with local families during the hockey season and those who are in school, attend Kentwood High School here in the city and have to maintain a B average to remain on the team. Players are eligible to play in the league at age 16. Each spring, the teams have a Bantam level draft of 14 and 15 year old kids. Each team is allowed to have three 20 year old players on their rosters. Generally players are with a team for three to four years, sometimes five, depending on their birth dates. The 20 year old players can play in the league at age 21, as long as they turn that age during their 20 year old season. The downside, if their is one, kids can be traded, just like in the pro leagues, so at such a young age, its tough. The kids are also away from there families, sometimes thousands of miles away. Its also tough on the families the boys live with, because most get attached to the boys. Players families also miss their young sons, being so far from home, for up to 9 months each season. Some parents come down from Canada for a lot of the games. I have become friends with one of the players father and he comes down from Kamloops, BC (7 hours one way), to attend every home game and he will travel to see road games, also. He will at times, come down and stauy for a week at a time. Now that is dedication for you. His son has been drafted by the Vancouver Canucks of the NHL, but will finish his Major Junior-A career first, before reporting to Vancouver. I also volunteer doing promotions with the T-Birds Promotions Dept.,, working with their mascot 'Cool Bird'. I work at their puck shooting booth at community street fairs in surrounding cities during the summer months. I am also on the Board of Directors for the Thunderbirds Foundation, that supports youth sports activities, both boys and girls in Kent and surrounding communities. The foundation also awards college scholarships to deserving young women and men, majoring in sports related studies. The T-Birds won the 2016-17. and the 2022-'23 WHL league championship. They play their home games at Kent's new 7,000 seat arena, Sho-Ware Center. The Western Hockey League is made up of 22 teams from Washington, Oregon, British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba, Canada. I was an off ice official, for the WHL and worked up in the instant replay booth, do statistics for the league and send them in, following the games. But I quit doing that, because I couldn't enjoy the game. I'm now a season ticket holder. Oh yes, I do a little volunteer work for Kent Downtown Partnership, in Community Relations as well, so I am keeping myself busy. One if my hobbies is raising show quality pigeons, such as fantails and other fancy breeds. Washington is a beautiful state, I have a lot of pictures in 'My Albums' on Classmates, please feel free to check them out. . Lots of wild life out here. I once did a lot of hiking and backpack trips, so I saw a lot of animals and took photos. As a matter of fact, wild life comes right into the metro area. Hunting and fishing are huge, although I don't do either. There is no hunting in the metro area, even outside of the cities, because the 'rural' areas are pretty densely populated. It makes wild life, fairly tame, so it's not uncommon to see deer, even elk, inside the city limits. I get back to NY every now and then, because my brother Fred still lives there. Oldest brother Nelson and his wife (#5), have a 5th wheel and travel all over, wintering over in and they live in, New Mexico. I still love my music and listen to classic rock, every chance I get. I have an iPod and have a ton of songs on it. With Brandy doing musical theater, we loved going to shows, not only her performances, but show's in the big theaters in Seattle. Brandy also sang country music and I like some of that type of music too. Classic Rock is still 'me' though. I no longer play drums, but it still in my blood, after playing with several rock bands. Needless to say, my hearing isn't what it should be. Several old friends have been found through Classmates and other social media. I am still looking* for Jerrilyn and Geraldine Miller, from Lake Ronkonkoma (FOUND!!!). The twins went to college at Oneonta State in Oneonta, NY, while I was there, Jerrilyn and I dated......Note: I have since found them! If anyone would like to get in touch with me, please feel free to do so. I love hearing from old friends. If you are ever in the Seattle area, let me know as well. I love being a tour guide, especially in the mountains. I try to avoid driving in Seattle, as much as possible though, traffic is a nightmare. We have three National parks in the state, all within an easy drive, and of course there is Mt. St. Helens National Monument, about three hours away. Oh, by the way....Some people accuse me of being a "braggart"...... well, that may be so, but PLEASE refrain from sending me negative comments and getting nasty, like some have done. They ask how I am doing and howe my life has turned out and when I tell them, they get upset. I believe some would be happier if I told tham I was homeless. Yikes!!! My best to all! John

Why does a couple inches of snow in the Seattle area, disrupt things so much, you might ask. Well there are a few simple answers. Number four is the main reason.

First, we don't have the equipment to take care of it.
