More about John:"Doing well and am very hopeful for the future.
I graduated from Florida State University with a BS in Communication and a minor in Coaching (yeah I wanted to be a coach at one point). I am but a course or two away from minors in Religion and American Literature. (Had a hard time trying to figure out what I wanted to do.) I played football as well.
Bobby Bowden was my coach and was very influential in my coming to Christ. He would pray at practices, never heard him cuss, didn’t drink and didn’t smoke – he did chew tobacco – a cigar would be in his mouth at the start of practice and it would disappear by the end of practice each day - but what do you expect from a coach in the south! What blew me away was he treated everybody with respect and always encouraged us as well. He encouraged all of us to think about life beyond football. It truly piqued a curiosity that was kindled Christmas Eve 1968. More on that later. I also was heavily involved in Campus Crusade for Christ. I made the decision to follow Christ in October of 1977 as result of these influences.
I squeezed my 4 years of college into 5 and had a blast from start to finish.
About mid-way through my first senior year, I finally figured out what God wanted for me to do with my life and that was to join the staff of Campus Crusade for Christ. I felt like what I wanted to do was to become a traveling speaker for Crusade and was even moving towards that goal. However, God had other ideas. Through ...Expand for more
circumstances that only God could have orchestrated, I ended up joining FamilyLife – a ministry of Crusade based here in Little Rock. (that is how I ended up here!)
My first position was as Conference Administrator – I was responsible for doing all the ‘behind the scenes’ set up and running of the FamilyLife Marriage Conferences. I traveled all over the US and can say that I have been to 47 of the 50 states! My last 10 years or so I managed all of the speakers that were on the FamilyLife team. I was humbled to work with the most incredible men and women around.
After 17 years, again in ways only God could have orchestrated, He led us to start a non-profit organization I called PriorityFamily. I was sensing that the ‘audience’ FL was targeting was the churched. I wanted to take the message and adapt it for a non-believing/seeker kind of audience. All the goals that I set for the organization in the 5-year plan were met except for one – attendance. That is what doomed the organization.
I started at Home Depot after PriorityFamily as a way station until I was able to get a real job. I am still at Home Depot part-time and still enjoy it. I love to remodel and work with my hands so it was a natural fit. I did know it was for a season.
I wanted to be involved in a ‘recession proof’ kind of job and felt the medical arena was a pretty good bet. I have been here about 2 years now and love everything about my job. I am in charge of all of the audio/visual needs of the hospital (which are many!). I also do so work in film. I love being in a position where I can serve others and this has been a perfect fit.
On a personal note, I was married for 23 years until my divorce in 2009. It really was a sad situation that even now makes me wonder what truly caused the break up. I guess that there are things in life that simply defy explanation. I do trust and experience that in the pain I see God as a faithful and loving heavenly father.
I am blessed however with 3 amazing kids. Daniel is 21, Ben is 19 and Sara Jean is 16. Life is good.".
