School
Rough Draft.
My schooling was broken into four parts: preschool at First Presbyterian, elementary school at Irving Park, and middle school and high school at Greensboro Day.
I meet a lot of my lifelong friends and acquaintances in preschool. It was an eclectic bunch of kids that grew into a varied, successful group of men and women. I learned some of lifeÂs important lessons there; things that would carry through for the rest of my life. For example, thereÂs a Ringmaster in all the venues of your life, someone who, through pure force of personality, dominates the room, the story, the interchange. If youÂre lucky, these people do this with humor, grace and sincerity. I was lucky enough to meet one there who ran the Ring with humor (if not always with kindness). If you canÂt be the Ringmaster, find a good one and enjoy the ride. If you find a bad oneÂ
RUN! If you canÂt tell the differenceÂ
YouÂre Screwed.
Many of the group I went to preschool with ended up at Irving Park with me; however, I met a lot of great new ones too. It was a more innocent time when walking to-and-from school was not seen as dangerous. And it was a time when teacherÂs shared the words and pictures of fantasies such as ÂWhere the Wild Things Are rather than indoc...Expand for more
trinating their charges with fantasies like ÂAn Inconvenient Truth. In short, we learned the basics and left out the politics.
In middle school I made my closest ties (especially with the cadre in section 5A). In the main, we were a bunch of highly intelligent, overindulged, rich kids that probably deserved a whipping more than we did a good education. However, between the demise of corporal punishment and the quality of our instruction, we got what we didnÂt deserve, a leg up on the backs of some harried, underappreciated teachers.
High School holds some of my best and worst memories. On the bad side were the usual issues created by adolescent angst and peer pressure. Fortunately, the core group that moved on with me (a goodly number all the way from preschool) helped me keep the bad to a minimum. On the good side there is far too much to list. Suffice it to say that we enjoyed our burgeoning freedom and began to form our characters. I have to give many thanks to the wonderful teachers I had, as well as apologize for all the difficulties I caused them. On the whole, I wouldnÂt change much; although, I would have studied a lot more instead of vegetated so much.
All in all, ÂI paid my dues and had my fun.Â
