John's Story
Life
My Spouse
We met while working at Sears in San Diego. We were married June 19th, 1971. Liz and I are empty nesters and I am semi retired after spending 38 years in the high tech industry. I spend my time serving on company boards and doing non profit work. I was board chair of Job Train, a non profit here in the Bay Area for 9 years and this kept me very busy. Plus I serve on the board of Amava. Also every fall I mentor a class at Stanford. From time to time I take on a project or 2 with different companies.
We have a house at Incline Village at Lake Tahoe and have just completed building a new house in Santa Cruz. It is above Monterey Bay with a 180 degree view of the entire bay. It has been a time consuming process as we have had to deal with 7 different governmental agencies, but it is well worth it. We are planning on splitting our time between the beach and the mountains. My son and I surf and all of the family skis and snowboards and so the two locations work out well.
Now that the kids are on their own Liz and I travel quite a bit and enjoy seeing the world.
My Kids
Our oldest daughter, Amy, turned 43 last July and is married and has three children, Ella Elizabeth is 14, Jack Charles is 12 and Holden John is 8. Amy graduated from Chico State and is a stay at home mom. She and Elliot have been married for 17 years. Both Liz and I are really enjoying being grandparents and spend as much time as we can with Ella, Jack and Holden . Alison is next and was 40 in August. She returned a few years ago from 2 and a half years in the Peace Corp, in Burkina Faso West Africa. We all went to visit her and spent time in her village where there was no electricity and no running water. When she returned from the Peace Corp she worked for a non profit agency in San Francisco for two years. She then spent 7 months in Ghana doing health work for the Carter Center. She graduated from Emory University in Atlanta eight years ago with her Masters in Public Health and is now working at the CDC in Atlanta. Alison and Jonathan got married in September of 2011 and had a beautiful wedding at a great place in the Santa Cruz Mountains. Liz and I get down to Atlant...Expand for more
a several times a year to visit with Alison and Jonathan. Jonathan is a law professor at Georgia State. They also come to visit as much as they can. We will be heading to Atlanta even more now. Alison and Jonathan just had their first baby. Benjamin Isaac Todres was born on August 6th, 2012. Both Liz and I were able to be there for the birth and could not be more excited. We actually just got back from Atlanta a few weeks ago where we were there for the birth of Desmond Andrew Todres on November 2nd 2014. Ben now has a new brother and Des is our 5th grandchild.
Andrew is our youngest, he turned 31 last May. He graduated from UC Santa Cruz in 2008. He was in Shanghai China for his junior year at Fudan University and is now fluent in Mandarin. Liz, Alison and I visited him there in May of 07 to celebrate his 21st birthday. In addition to Shanghai, we visited Beijing and Xian. He started an accounting career at PWC in September of 08 and is now in finance at a start up in Silicon Valley. He is also very involved in acting and had a non speaking part in the movie Fruitvale. He is busy pursuing dual careers in business and acting.
The picture was taken in our 1947 Woody by the beach house in Santa Cruz in 2007. 4 generations of Laings are in it. Daughter Alison and my mom are in the front. My wife Liz and son Andrew, I am in the drivers seat with our dog Maggie, daughter Amy and granddaughter Ella and son in law Elliot and grandson Jack are in the seats behind me. Unfortunately my mom passed away in July of 2011, she was 92. Also our pup Maggie passed away in October 2011 at 15. I miss them both a lot.
Other than Alison, they all live near us and we get to spend a lot of time together. In January of 08 we rented a villa in Mexico an hour south of Cancun and took the entire family and had a wonderful time.
In August of 2010 I turned 60 and we took the whole family to Maui for a week to celebrate. We rented a big house right outside of Lahania and had a wonderful time. Liz turned 60 in April of 2011 and we celebrated by taking the whole family to Key West for a week with a stop at Disney World. It was a lot of fun!
Life is great and we are very blessed!
