John's Story
Life
Well...her she goes: (this would be a good time refill your drink, or get more popcorn)
I graduated Anderson High in 1977. (but you already know that) Shortly thereafter, I went to work at Johns Mannsville, in Alexandria, Indiana as a quality control technician. It was a great job, and I stayed at it for one shift. That's how long it took them to discover I wasn't whom they thought they hired. The person they hired for that Q.C. job never showed up to start, so they assumed I was him and put me to work in their lab, straight-away. I didn't know squat about chemistry, but it was still a great job!
I moved to Lafayette, Indiana in late 1978, pursuing career in the automotive field. I started as a BMW/PORSCHE auto mechanic, and ended up as a servicewriter for a BMW/Chevrolet dealership.
I married in 1979, and moved to rural Montgomery county (near Crawfordsville, IN.) in 1981, and I've lived there ever since.
I started a tool sales route that same year. (no, it wasn't Snap-On, so please don't ask for warranty replacements, or rebates!)
In 1983, I began driving a semi tractor-trailer. Twenty-two months later I had driven to, and through, all forty-eight contiguous states, and completed nearly three-hundred-thousand "accident-free" miles.
After being treated for a severe case of white-line fever brought on by the mass consumption of caffeinated truck-stop beverages, and undergoing a psychiatric exam for wanting to be a truck driver, I started a Cemetery Monument company in 1985. '85 was a busy year.
My Father passed away in the winter of 1985. He died en-route to Community Hospital in Anderson, of a massive heart attack. Mom is still walking three miles a day, and mowing her own yard every week, and just as ORNERY as shes' ever been.
In 1999 a better opportunity arose and I start...Expand for more
ed scaling down the Monument business, until I closed it in early 2001.
The new opportunity I mentioned above was joining the Wal-Mart corporations' "optical division".
This new challenge involved servicing, calibrating, and maintaining various simple, and complex machines used in the grinding and polishing of Rx eyeglass lenses to exacting tolerances. (take breeaaattthhh)
And all was well!
Then the clouds thickened, the rains came,, and the "fateful day" was upon us!
As was/is the practice of the "Dark Empire", Wal-mart laid off/threw out myself and fifty other facility employees from the rank and file, who were nearing the status of being 100% vested in the profit sharing and 401K programs. And you know what it would have meant had we become vested...less money in the pockets of the corporate "bigshots" of course.
Enough of that! Talking about "them" only makes for bitter feelings. (bitter,...Hmmm?)
After the work-force massacre of '03, I was studying for a degree in industrial electricity at Ivy-Techs' Lafayette campus, when I was accepted and hired by CSX Transportations' railroad division as a journeyman machinist.
I started working there early in 2004 and have never been happier.
My new railroad vocation requires me to perform FRA mandated inspections and repairs to diesel locomotives, as they enter or leave the service facility, located in Avon, IN. (read that: lotsa' pay for a little work)
I miss all of my friends and classmates and I hope to hear from all of you soon. Thank you, for the time you've spent reading this montage of my thoughts, which are the summation of my life experiences since weÂve graduated from "the BIG INDIAN" 'lo these many years ago.
My best regards to you and yours,
John Lawrence
