John's Story
Life
After high school I went to college for fine art. After approximately 10 years of being a dirt-poor, bohemian college/university student, I graduated with an MFA. After drifting around for a few years I eventually landed a teaching job that fits me like a glove. I'm currently working in Northern Minnesota at Northland College, teaching fine arts as well as martial arts and police defensive tactics.
I spent a year in 2002-03 teaching art in the Baltic state of Latvia with the state department's Fulbright Program. I have a big interest in global education as well as service learning. Nearly every summer I take groups of students overseas on a travel/study programs focusing on some aspect of art. I am also a working artist and have been active in exhibiting both locally and overseas.
In October 2004, I traveled to Scotland in order to hang several exhibitions, and to conduct student and faculty workshops at a College in Arbroath. While on sabbatical leave for the '04-'05 school year I spent a couple months in Australia as part of my research. It was nice to miss out on...Expand for more
a Minnesota winter for a change!
Some of the work that I produced during this time was featured in an exhibition at the MNSCU Chancellor's Office in St. Paul in 2005-06.
In 2007, two Northland students and I did an 1800+ mile scholarship fundraising bicycle trip from the Gulf of Mexico at Mobile, Alabama back to the Canadian Border in northern Minnesota. We did the trip unsupported, and it was fantastic experience!
Bolstered from my success the year before, in 2008 I attempted another big bicycle trip. The idea was to ride the length of Australia from Adelaide to Darwin right through the "red center". That was the idea... but this time the reality was a let down. After all the planning, training, expense, etc. I was forced to concede defeat shortly after starting, having contracted pneumonia (In the desert- Who does that?!). In 2010 I gave Australia another go, and this time managed to peddle all the way from Adelaide to Darwin about 2300 miles unsupported with two friends...an excellent trip and life changing!
