John's Story

Life I left High School to attend the University of Maryland on a football schoolarship, Played ball well but failed miserably in the academic process. Left school and returned to Levittown to work in the good old Steel Mills, a fellow H.S school mate Elmer Hibbs talked me into Retail. After working at Kings, Two Guys and then a few odd jobs I found myself back in retail sales with Holiday Fitness Centers at the Quaker Bridge Mall, discouraged by a long pre opening I took a chance and followed a friend to West Palm beach Fl.Working the fitness scene was good for awhile but it became old and then I tried what a lot of young Floridians do, the restuarant and bar business , after a year or so I quickly felt that I was to old at thirty some to continue. Looking for partime work I applied at Levitz furniture , starting in the warehouse and then with a little luck I moved to management then to sales . After a long tenure in sales I took the job as store manager. Then without total suprise Levitz closed all the stores in Fl. Since then I've worked the furniture scene with Mama and Papa operations. I've married a beautiful and supportive woman, Arlene from the Trenton area and we have two children a boy Ryan who lives in the LA area working in the film industry ,and my daughter, Kellyann who is a wonderful teacher and the mother of my only granchild Gregory. I'm currently looking into opening my own bus.or buying a franchise with a neighbor. I still live in Fl. and since most of my realitives are in Pittsburgh , Pa.I rarely visit Levittown except for the occasional class reunion. Maybe I'll see at one. Update 03/16/08 I'm semi retired and I'm fullfilling a dream to own my own Business. A friend that I worked with at Levitz furniture are engaging a partnership to implem...Expand for more
ent an on line furniture direct sales. I'm excited because I'm learning so much about being in bus. for your self . I recently enrolled in a home bus. course at the local HS. I also attended our last reunion , sinced we combimed classes it was well attended and I enjoyed seeing so many friends from the past. I dragged my brother Ron Urban, it was hid first and I think he really enjoyed himself. I keepin touch with some of my close friends from school especially the ones that live in Florida. Since my college years were dismall I consider my HS years my fondest and would enjoy hearing from anyone that shared those years with me... John I haven't been to this site in awhile, here a quick update. Not long after entering my last entry I developed a rare foot disease called Charcot. I managed to contact an infection MRSA. With out going into a Lot of detail I almost died . I became septic and I believe.that being in great physical shape and my faith in God pulled me thru The doctors referred to me as the "miracle man ". . Thanks to my family, wife, son daughter, son ,and granchildren. Their love and support inspired me during this ordeal. I won't note you with all the medical details but I now have a kidney transplant and I had my right foot amputated. My sister Sharon was a perfect match and was my donor. So my love of athleticis now limited I still am very active. Most people that have a transplant gain weight I actually lost pounds. If you know someone who's going for a transplant or amputation and needs support. Have them contact me, I have been thru he'll and back with hospitals and treatment. I can offer advice and help. We have moved to an over 55 and older community Ormond Beach Fl. So.far it has been great. I have a lot in common with my neighbors, old age!!
