John's Story

Life Born 15 Feb. 1928, Atlanta, Georgia. Dad had TB, coughing blood, etc.; doctor said "move to the high mountains in the West, or you will die." So when I was 9 months of age, off to Denver, Colorado, in an Essex sedan, with Grandma Little (born 1865) along to take care of me. 1943, moved to Leadville, CO; graduated from high school there in May, 1945. U.S. Navy for one year, then U. of Colorado. B.A., 1952. Taught one-room mountain schools, 1950 (Chromo, CO), and 1950-51 (Parshall, CO). Taught History, Typing, and Shorthand at Merino, CO, high school, Jan. 1952-May, 1953. M.A., Linguistics, U. of Michigan, 1954. Instructor, then Senior Foreign Instructor, Indonesian English Teacher Training Project, Jogjakarta, Central Java, 1954-58. Director of Courses, projected Cambodian-American binational cultural center, Phnom Penh, 1959-61, and then Burma-America Institute, Rangoon, Dec., 1961-June, 1962. Asst. Prof., then Assoc. Prof., Robert College, Bebek, Istanbul, Turkey, 1962-65 (Linguistics, Hist. of Engl. Lang., Composition). Ph.D. candidate, Linguistics, Cornell U., Ithaca, NY, 1965-71. Married Catherine Jane Coakley, of Boulder, CO, in Dec., 1948. Two sons, Stephen and Philip. Stephen is the director of Hawai'i's foremost museum, the Honolulu Academy of Arts. Philip is a highly qualified expert in computer and printer maintenance (Alameda, CA). Married Liong Fung Chu, of Bandung, West Java, Indonesia, in 1986, Two sons, Paul (1989) and Matthew (1992). 2008: Three operations, one to replace mitral valve (in the heart), another to remove my first melanoma, and another to check for more melanomas. None! Praise God!
