John's Story
Life
After graduating from University High School in 1970, I had no idea what I was going to do for the coming summer, much less the rest of my life. I spent the summer of '70 at the quarries - I had no job and wasn't looking for employment. As summer ended I watched as my high school classmates went away to college or started classes at Indiana University.
A few days before Labor Day 1970, my father sat me down and asked what I was planning to do in the coming year. I told him I had no plans. He said that was what he had suspected and told me that I would be starting to work the day after Labor Day at the RCA factory in town. I knew there was no reason to argue with my Dad and I started to work as a stock handler at RCA as summer ended. It took all of 1-day for me to decide that working in the factory was not for me and I told my father that I would be starting college in January. I saved most of the money I earned at RCA for college expenses and then right before the start of classes, I used my savings to fly to Europe with a high school friend, Eric Christ. During my trip to Europe I learned to ski and developed a life-long love affair with skiing and traveling.
I started Indiana University in the fall of 1971 and graduated in December...Expand for more
1974 with a BA in sociology. During college I met my future wife - she was dating my roommate - and we married before my last semester in school. My wife had grown up in an Air Force family and had spent quite a few years living in England. Both of us talked about wanting to travel and live in different places, so upon graduation I enlisted in the US Army with the guarantee of an assignment in Europe.
Charlene (my wife) and I spent most of our first 5 years of marriage living in Germany and over the course of a 30-year military career we also spent 3-years in England and 18-months in Italy. Our stateside assignments included Miami, FL, San Francisco, CA, Washington D.C. and Sierra Vista, AZ along with various stops in Georgia, Indiana, Pennsylvania, and Kansas. We loved living and traveling in Europe and I loved being part of a great organization - the US Army.
My wife and I have been married for over 46 years and have 2 great kids, Lara & Matthew, 2 handsome grandsons (Ethan & Aaron) and 2 beautiful granddaughters (Macy & Alayna). I retired from the Army in 2005 and retired from Government Service (GS) on July 31, 2014. After retirement, Charlene & I moved to Phoenix, AZ where we keep on traveling around the United States and overseas.
