John's Story

College After completing my undergraduate degree with a BS degree in Criminal Justice from Troy State University, Alabama, I went on to finish my Masters degree with Webster University, Missouri in 1994, majoring in Security Management. I joined the Air Force at age 17 after graduating from Tooele High School. I met my beautiful wife in the upper peninsula of Michigan and took her with me all over the world: Hawaii, Guam, Japan, Spain, Thailand. I Served tours of duty in New Mexico, Michigan, Texas, and Colorado. Most of my Air Force career was with the Air Force Office of Special Investigations conducting felony investigations. Later I specialized in counterespionage and polygraph. I retired from the Air Force in 1989 after serving 23 years. In my civilian life, I worked for the Colorado Springs Police Department from 1989 to 1991. I then became a contract employee with Wackenhut Corporation and managed polygraph operations for the Department of Energy in Albuquerque, NM. In 2004, I became a federal agent with the Defense Intelligence Agency in Washington, DC. That job took me to countries behind the iron curtain, Afghanistan, South America, and Asia. Missing the west, I took a federal transfer to El Paso, TX with U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) in 2008 where I worked as a polygraph examiner quality control manager until my federal retirement in November 2016. Even though retired, I still work as a contractor for CBP, managing their polygraph program under the employ of Capital Center for Credibility Assessment. This major work changed allowed me the luxury of working from my home. I am so thankful I still have the vigor and health to keep working surrounded by my wonderful family and friends. I was born in Hotchkiss, Colorado but Tooele, Utah was my starting point; however, it certainly did not launch me into my professional career. That I did on my own because there was certainly no one within the school system in Tooele that ever looked out for my best interest. I did, though, leave behind a few good friends, my first love (DM), and acquaintances who could care less, I presume, what ever happened to me after I left Tooele and became successful. I read from posts that I am remembered as kind. I tried to be kind but I was really shy. That all changed as I grew up in life, went to college, and completed an Air Force career. I eventually became the President of the American Association of Police Polygraphists. That shyness had since diminished as I had to face a large membership of private and police polygraph professionals. I have really enjoyed my life and do look forward to my third retirement when I turn 70. For now, I press ahead loving my job. UPDATE - 04/10/2017. In Oct 2014, I moved to the Vineyard Estates in the Rio Grande Valley of Las Cruces, NM surrounded by vineyards and pecan trees. Looked like a good place to enjoy the remaining days of my life - but it was short lived. UPDATE - 12/15/2016. Received a job offer I could not refuse so turned in my gun, badge and credentials and retired from Federal service...Expand for more
. Sold house in Las Cruces and moved to Albuquerque, NM where my two children and six grandchildren enjoy us being close to them, What a life and my wife Jo and I are loving it. Next year, Jo and I will celebrate our 50th wedding anniversary. Where have all the years gone and so quickly since 1966. UPDATE - July 12, 2019 - turned 70 last year and still going strong. Retirement is not yet in my vocabulary. I try to enjoy every minute that I am alive as I see my old friends and professional acquaintances pass into the next life. UPDATE - December 11, 2020 - still working as a contract program manager for U.S. Customs and Border Protection. Working from home. Spending summer months in the upper peninsula of Michigan outside Mackinac Island where we have a summer home. Had to pass up this past summer because of the COVID pandemic. Have to escape the heat of the high desert of New Mexico at least yearly. I see retirement ahead of me in 2023 when I turn 75 (the new 65). UPDATE: 3/23/2023. I planned to retire at age 75 in August 2023; I really did, but there are just too many great activities going on that I am compelled to see them to their conclusion. Maybe retirement is not in my vocabulary when I enjoy getting up in the morning and look forward to working with 35 former federal polygraph examiners throughout the United States. Our work is in support of U.S. Customs and Border Protection. Working from home in conducting supervisory overview of our examiners has been great. I know my tenure will soon have to come to an end one day, but for now it is full speed ahead. I thank God for giving me my good health. I am sure the next update will be my retirement goodbye. UPDATE: 8/11/2023. Today I turned 75 and still working. I have penciled in my official retirement on April 1, 2024. I also learned yesterday that our company won the polygraph contract with U.S. Customs and Border Protection for five more years. I wanted to be here and participate in that presentation to win the contract which I thought we would win because I came from Customs, and I am well known in the polygraph community. I will however, not finish out that contract term as my mission is complete and have chosen to retire in the spring rather than in the winter. UPDATE 3/19/2024: April is upon us and still going at it working from behind my computer monitors. I came to realization that I do not need to plan a retirement date. I get 45 days a year for vacation so can come and go as I please. For the future, I will go on and when my body tells me to stop, I will. I have been working most of my life starting with the Anderson grocery store (now gone) in Tooele at age 13, then working for Mr. Lawrence Hood at his drug store and ranch until I joined the Air Force at age 17 after I graduated from High School. I guess I would not know what to do if I did not have some type of work. I have a lot of hobbies, especially playing guitar and heading out to go fishing when I can. Life is just wonderful and I thank God when I wake up in the morning because he gave me another day.
