John's Story

I am enjoying retired life. I returned to a passion on mine in collage and am making ceramic sculpture and functional ware, working at the Baltimore Clayworks. I also continue to utilize the expertise I developed professionally. This spring I lectured to graduate students at the University of Massachusetts - Boston and am giving a lecture at the University of Virginia. Last Fall I lectured - on line - to graduate classes of Syracuse and Denver Universities and to class at Aquinas. I continue to serve as a Fellow with the UMass-Boston McCormick School of Public Polic and the Global Council for Science and The Environment and serve on the steering committee of the Earth Observation for Ecosystem Accounting (EO4EA) initiative. I remain active promoting Environmental and Ecosystem accounting and the UN Statistic's System for Environmental and economic Accounting. My wife and I have been traveling domestically and look forward to travel again internationally as restriction related to the pandemic are lifted. I left the U.S. Department of State, in 2018, where I had worked since 2002 as the Division Chief for Sustainable Development and Multilateral Affairs and later as senior adviser on the Science-Policy interface, I led a team responsible for U.S. engagement with the UN Environment Program, the Commission on Sustainable Development, the Global Environment Facility (GEF), the UN Economic Commission for Europe - Committee on Environmental Policy, the Organization for...Expand for more
Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) - Environmental Policy Committee and other multilateral environment, natural resource and sustainable development organizations and processes.. As Senior Advisor on the Science-Policy interface my responsibilities include representing the State Department in the U.S. Group on Earth Observation where I co-chair the international Activities Working Group and serving as a co-chair of the international - Group on Earth Observation Program Board. and worked with the UN Statistical Committee, where I still serve, in my personal capacity on the Technical Advisory Group on Environmental and Ecosystem Accounting which seeks to compliment economic measures such as GDP with information on the value of the environment and ecosystem services. 1997-2002 I was regional coordinator for Latin America in the U.S. Agency for International Development - Global Environment Center. 1994-1997 I was a Foreign Affairs Officer for Natural Resource Management in the U.S. Department of State, Office of Ecology, and an American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) Science and Diplomacy Fellow.
