John's Story

Life After graduating from High School,I worked for GTE (now Verizon) in the Coeur d'Alene, Idaho area and then in Lynnwood Washington. Work slowed down, so I moved back to the San Fernando Valley in Los Angeles, where I had grown up. I worked for FedEX for 10 years and then spent some time off, traveling to Ireland, England, and Scotland. For awhile I lived up in Bishop,Ca., but jobs are scarce there, so I moved back to Los Angeles. I had been volunteering at West Hills Hospital for some time on my days off work and that eventually turned into a full time job in Radiology. In 1997 I met Sofia Villanueva, who would later become my wife. I continued my work at West Hills Hospital and at the same time visiting and dating Sofia. We married on November 27, 1999. It was on the Feast Day of Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal, one our favorite titles of Our Lady! We lived for four years in Canoga Park and in September of 2003, we purchased our first home, a townhouse in Reseda, a few miles away. That's where we are today! In 1998 I started working towards a career in Nursing by taking night classes at Pierce College. In 2000, I started the LVN Nursing Program at College of the Canyons. I completed the course in June of 2002. While studing for the Board Exam, I worked full time at Motion Picture Hospital for most of a year. Then I passed the Board exam and became...Expand for more
a Licensed Vocational Nurse. After a two week trip with my family to the Phillipines to see my wife Sophie's family and especially to meet my mother-in-law, I started work as a "new grad" at Providence Holy Cross Hospital. During a challenging new graduate program including a three month orientation progam, I was introduced to life as a Medical/Surgical nurse in an acute care setting working the night shift. I spent almost four years at Holy Cross, gaining valuable experience and making new friends. Currently, I'm between jobs and exploring different avenues in the field of nursing. I can't leave out the fact that I have seven beautiful step-daughters through my marriage to Sophie. Their names are Ludelyn, Susie Arleen, Net Net, Lilibeth, Hazel, Shally, and Herlyn. Just one year ago, our three youngest daughter: Hazel, Shally, and Herlyn, immigrated to the US as permanent resident aliens. In five years they can apply for US Citizenship. My wife Sophie is currently in the process of becoming a US citizen. Hazel, Shally and Herlyn live with us at our townhouse in Reseda and all of them have full time jobs. We have a great time together and just last weekend we took our first family vacation to Las Vegas. We've had many happy times together since their arrival last October. We're looking forward to many challenges and accomplishments in the years ahead!
