John's Story

Life I continue to enjoy bike riding, photography and stargazing (surprise, surprise!). The big news (for me): After 36 years in engineering, I've retired! (For real, this time.) All the best to my Mead HS friends. School I'll never forget wonderful teachers like Mr Griffith (math), Mr. Dalton (physics), Mr. Steuve (drafting) and Mrs. Tuffley (senior living). I'd easily do it all over again and have more fun this time! There are certain 70's songs like "Dream Weaver" that take me right back to Mead HS. College Two wonderful years at SFCC. I fell in love with my Calculus teacher! Mrs. Glubrecht. Wow! We played Foosball in the SUB on many fine afternoons. Great memories. Then two wonderful years at University of Utah in SLC. I lived in the dorms my first year there (Junior year) and enjoyed the morning walks across campus looking across the Salt Lake valley and snow capped mountains. It was a great electrical engineering education. I wonder how my good friend Carl Snow is doing? Workplace After graduating from University of Utah in 1981 with a bachelors degree in electrical engineering, I joined HP in Corvallis, Oregon. I worked there for almost 7 years designing computer chips for HP calculators including HP-41...Expand for more
CX, HP-28, HP-27S, HP-71B and HP-48SX. What an enjoyable place to be an R&D engineer! In 1988 I transferred to HP's Boise, Idaho office and have designed computer chips and logic boards for Laserjet printers. I've also been an R&D project manager for rear projection displays, huge mass storage disk arrays, and (most recently) Laserjet Multi-Function Printers (copiers). Some of the models I worked on: Laserjet 3, 4, 5, FC-60 Storage Array, and Laserjet 4345, 4730, 9000, 9500, 9050, etc. HP is a great place to work! I left HP in 2007, relaxed for 4 months and then jointed Ugobe Life Forms to work on personal robotics including a cool baby dinosaur named Pleo. Ugobe closed it's doors in early 2009 after running out of venture capital. In May 2009 I joined Cradlepoint as Hardware Director for their 3G/4G network (router) platforms. I was there for 8 years before recently retiring. Those 8 years were the pinnacle of my career! Military No military history, but I sincerely appreciate and value the work and sacrifice our military members make everyday to serve our country.
