John's Story
Life
Working in Alberta was a lonely time for me, although after the school year I travelled to Jasper, Lake Louise, Banff,Calgary and Edmonton before returning to Brantford for the summer. While working in Northern Ontario, I had my first fly out fishing experience. The first four years were great as there were single people who I chummed around with. But after time these people began to move from the remote community where I lived. It was during this period that I bought my first pickup truck. Since returning to Brantford, I have bought a condominium [1998]. Every Sunday I go over to my parents' place for a visit with relatives and dinner. Returning to Brantford was the best move that I ever made. Every summer, I go up to Central Ontario for Summer Theater, camping and visits to places of interest.
College
After graduating from High School, I furthered my education, completing my undergraduate degree from Laurentian University, majoring in French. Nipissing University College was my next stop. I graduated from the Faculty of Education with a B.Ed. Since graduation I have taken several Additional Qualification courses, mainly in French...Expand for more
and Special Education.
Workplace
Since graduating from the Faculty of Education at Nipissing University, I have held teaching positions in Alberta [ 1 year], Saskatchewan [1 year] and Northern Ontario [7 years]. While in Northern Ontario, I experienced fly out fishing. Currently I am a teacher with the Grand Erie District School Board. I have been employed as a teacher in Brantford since 1989. Almost all of my Brantford experience has been in inner core city schools. I have been teaching at Central Public School for 10 years now.
2004 was an amazing year. Last year I piloted the Roots of Empathy program in my class. Students became much more caring and much better problem solvers. I co-authored a research paper around this program with my vice principal. In November we presented our research paper at OISE, Faculty of Education at the University of Toronto. During a lunch in the Faculty Lounge, I was presented an award for my research. I truly believe that this was a once in a career year. Everything went my way. This year I am continuing to have the Roots of Empathy program in my class and am writing another Action Research paper.
