John's Story
Story, eh? OK. Once upon a time, there was a 22 year old guy who met a 35 year old woman at Brodi's. We danced, she told me she was 35 with 5 kids, and we fell in love and got married. Smartest move I ever made. I was in the Air Force (enlisted in 1970) and what got me into college was the slightest chance that I could become a pilot for the AF. Long story short: I was too old and got turned down in early '81. But I was almost done, so I figured the degree was absolutely worth having whether or not I got to fly. Again, one of the smartest things I ever did. About 6 months after graduation, the AF sent us to Ellsworth AFB in South Dakota. Culture shock to both my wife and I. . We put down roots and stayed 18 years. Retired from the AF in July of 1991 and after an abortive attempt at running a one man video production company, I went to school and got my teaching license in SD. Taught there for 5 years the we moved to Eugene, Oregon, and I taught HS English and journalism in Creswell HS just south of Eugene. Wow, did I ever love teaching HS!. I retired after 15 years at CHS and now am totally retired at 65, soon to be 66. Val (my wife) and I have been blessed with 44 wonderful years together and look forward to the future. We've also been blessed with 7 kids/stepkids, 14 grandkids and 2 great grandkids. It's been a great ride and it ain't over yet! I like to think the best years are ahead of us.
