John's Story

What's new: updated December 2012: I am a retired elementary teacher, did my full 36 years. Been remarried for five and a half years now and living in Reisterstown, MD (about 15 miles north of Baltimore) since 2008. I am working as a trainer/consultant for a web-based company now called Edmentum. It changed to Plato in the spring and now to this name. It keeps me traveling all over, not only in MD, but many times in NJ, PA, VA, and DE doing onsite trainings. I also train online for the company for three products: Study Island, Reading Eggs and Education City. I just requested the tutorials to start on a fourth product (ESL Reading Smart) and hope to be up and running with that in a few months. With the restructuring of the company many people left, were fired or reassigned, so I continue to be real busy, even with seven trainings this month. The travels to NJ are always a trip down Memory Lane. My youngest daughter graduated from Lebanon Valley College (found out that was Dr. "Willie" Workinger's alma mater) with a major in Music Business. She worked at PNC bank for 18 months, found a neat job at the Adams County Winery (Gettysburg PA), but that only lasted three months and after a transition of working retail for a few months landed a job in Hagerstown, MD half marketing/ half sales, but she says she loves it and the people she works for. She continued her job at Old Navy, in the Gettysburg Outlets, because the people she worked for were so nice and it brings in good gas money. As a result of all this she moved to Gettysburg last May and lives virtually in the square. It makes life easy for me to tell people where she lives as the majority of the country know Gettysburg. My oldest completed her Masters of Fine Arts from American University with a degree in Film and Media. She has been working at WHAG-TV, a small market NBC (also) in Hagerstown, MD. She continues to write, but was disappointed that she did not do well at Slamdance or Austin, like the previous year, so it's back to the drawing (writing) board! I enjoy traveling and have been on three cruises since 2010. We have plans to cruise to Europe in the spring (Italy and Greece). I would love to ruins of ancient Greece and Rome. The household includes 4 animals: three dogs, two from the Humane Society a half mile up the road, and a cat. Dogs are good, Sasha (13), Sadie (7), Sophie (4). I became a grandparent, well, a step-grandfather, but I'll take it! Holden is a charm! He is 5 months old now and I have worked out my training schedule to be available to do grandchild care twice a week. I find it is exhausting! I love it and he is rolling over, almost figured out that curling up legs will lead to crawling, and we have lots of adventures twice a week. I will be able to start making him baby food in January. This is a repeat of my life back in the 1980's when I was home with both of my daughters for either child leave or sabbatical leave. I am always in my comfort zone being in the house and kitchen. I still love the NY Yankees, but the Orioles made for an exciting baseball season. I watched them any evening that I was already in front of the TV and with nothing in particular to watch. I did get to one game in April with my buddy from Waynesboro and it was memorable as he caught a foul balI. Duke basketball is keeping me happy this year. This started twenty years ago when a BHS alumni was a member of one of their early national championship teams. This is serious Baltimore Raven country, and I continue to be a big fan. While I enjoy college football, I really don't take it seriously, and won't, until there is actually a playoff system and the computer and peoples opinions are not the dominant reason for a ranking. My Dad passed away in 2009 and...Expand for more
Mom in 2007, so my 30 year connection with FL, their home from 1979, has ended. I enjoyed seeing Jersey Boys (three times) and smile when Tommy proudly yells "Belleville, NJ!", which was their alma mater. I'm very glad I moved to PA in 1974 which was my home till 2007, but I love my new life in MD and the woman I met seven years ago. Reisterstown can have some small town charm while being just outside of Baltimore. I got into PA because of the HS band trip in 1968 to Gettysburg, then attended York College and finally ended up living in Waynesboro, PA where my ex-wife was from. I loved being an elementary teacher, it was a wonderful occupation. I got a master's in Elem. Counseling, but stayed in the classroom my entire career. I still love music, have all my albums, and even play them, on a real genuine turntable! I'm a rocker, but also enjoy country. Speaking of rocker, I love to listen to any Allman Bros music, Clapton, and anything with Joe Walsh. My favorite Sirius/XM station to listen to in the car is 50's on 5 or 60's on 6. Might I be showing my age??? I collect Tootsietoys and Auburn/Sun Rubber Company toys. The Tootsietoys have become a real passion and I am teaching myself the art of restoring them. A trip to my toy shelves in like a time travel back to the 1950's. I'm a friend of Bill W. for over 15 years now. If you know what that means be happy for me because it means that I turned my life around. The 90's got pretty ugly for me! I enjoy going to meetings, but use my schedule as an excuse to not get to many. Bottom line I continue to stay clean and sober and it works for me. Perhaps some of you who couldn't stand me then might like me now. I just wish they had known about ADHD in the 50's and 60's. I was also so darn immature! I think I am a much different person then the one you knew. Except for the music department, I don't have a lot of fond memories of HS, but then again I think the majority of people don't look back at HS with good memories. It is only as we get older that some of the people who had great smiles, or were just good people still can bring back pleasant thoughts. Pet Peeve: people who join Classmates, but don't take 30 minutes out of their life and put together some thoughts as to what happened to them in the past 40+ years. This is 2012, you can import or scan a picture too. Heck, they even have our yearbook on line and you can bookmark a name. I pride myself in letting people see me as I was in 1968 (remember going to the photo place in Bloomfield Center next to the Royal Theater?) I was in Bloomfield back in late 2011 and went by the HS. It is celebrating 100 years, and it is a monster! A whole block of wall to wall building, four stories high. Foley Field is sad ... they took down the iconic stadium (I'm sure the concrete was considered dangerous and cracking), but they replaced it with a pathetic, small, aluminum bleachers that hold a fraction of the original. The good days of the Big Ten are all gone, and Lord know who we play or why. The only rivalry still out there is Montclair who still takes us to the woodshed every Thanksgiving. Hats off to Montclair as they were one of the state's best this past season in pigskin. I would love to hear from anyone. Sorry I've missed any reunions, but with living 200+ miles away, retiring, being remarried, new jobs, a new house, and both parents passing away, it has been a real back seat "pipe dream" to get in the NJ area where I could reconnect with old classmates. My sister (Marilyn, Class of 64) stills lives in Essex County and I'm happy to say that I have seen her about three times or so in the past year. Thanks for taking the time to read this. Drop me an email, if for no more than a quick "hello".

This makes sense! Actual competition week to week and people get eliminated! Makes it exciting to watch. Baseball, football and basketball figured this out, so did the other professional sports.Glad to see racers add this o

Retro Thursday! The first one I made! This was my outstanding class from Fairview Avenue School 1974-75. We had our lives turned upside down with the (Thursday) October 3rd (1974) fire that totally destroyed the building. T
