John's Story

Life Currently a patent attorney specializing in computer related law. Spending much of my time in Boston area because most of my high-tech clients are out here on the coast. I attended Purdue University - BS Bio. After that, I spent 5 year counseling at the local psychiatric hospital as a member of the nursing staff. In '77 I started a computer store with a neighbor, and in "80 I joined a software company. It flourished until '87 when new management came in. I went to Indiana Univ to get my JD in '88. I've lived in Lafayette for 35 years and continue to permanently reside there. So, miss Indiana - I liked living in a cornfield.... don't like living in the city. here the traffic congestion defies description. But the rest is OK, and I am slowly acclimating to it all. The commute is something else, though... Assorted cats, occasional raccoons, possums, etc. After 18 years finally broke it off with my S.O. tough thing to do, but it was, sadly, necessary. not very happy about that. managed to get the cat population down from 20 to 9. found homes for everybody. challenging! but rewarding. opening another office in Indianapolis. Now have 3 offices. that's really probably too many, but everybody wants me, I guess. too much popularity is not a good thing, sometimes. spending a lot of time in El Salvador. amazing place, really. much better in the past 5 years, now that they have gotten over the civil war. Had lunch with the First Lady at the San Salvador White House 3 weeks ago, and then spent the night at the hospital trying to get 2 critically burned children flown up to the Shriner's burn center in Galveston. I guess it's stuff like that which gets you invited to dinner at i...Expand for more
nteresting places... Sadly, however, the children both died before we could get them transferred. never could get them stabilized enough to move. for the one child, it was a tragedy - he had 50% 2nd degreee burns, and died only because he inhaled a bunch of really hot gas. For the other child, however, it was probably a blessing. He had 90% 3rd degree, and would have been in for years of genuine agony with only hopes of fairly dismal results. spent some time with the families of the children a few days later. that was also pretty difficult. It was also difficult to know how to comfort the parents, let alone the siblings. And doing it in Spanish just made it all the more difficult. I also spend a lot of time working with some of the local orphanages and communities, generally working on water projects and related items such as power for the pumps, plumbing, etc. Generally, if I can't do it myself, I work it through Rotary. I've met an amazing and eclectic group of people in El Salvador - artists, doctors, politicians, bar tenders, hotel managers, you name it, and every single one has been amazingly friendly and helpful. it's really great. Very fulfilling and satisfying experience, even when it is really really difficult.... Next project is working on getting an airplane or two to see if I can set up an air-ambulance service so we can act a lot more quickly next time. I have succeeded in getting funding for adding a burn center onto the Bloom Pediatric Hospital in San Salvador. My thanks to the Mehan Foundation in Wisconsin. now all I have to do is figure out how to equip the building when it is completed... ideas, suggestions, and, most of all, contacts, are gratefully accepted.
