John P.'s Story

I graduated from Minnie Holman school with many of the Woodlawn High school friends. They went to Woodlawn and I attended Glenn for my freshman year. I tried to transfer to Woodlawn and attended class for several weeks when I was informed that my paper work had not been received at the office. So I tried to returne to Glenn but with out any papers I could not be enrolled. So I joined the Alabama National and went basic training at Ft. Gordon, Ga. I finished basic and returned to Bham. I volenteered for active duty and went to Ft.Benning, Ga for jump school and returned to the 20th Special Forces Gp. I was in that unit for four years. I was injured while making a jump and went thru two back surgeries. After recovering from the surgeries I became a dupty sheriff for Jefferson county. After a year there I was recalled to active duty and left for advanced training with a Special Forces Group. After I returned from my first assignment I attended the 300F1 coarse now called 18 Delta I was sent over seas to another Special Forces group stationed in Europe. I served in Europe for a total of eight years as part of a counter terrorest group. I returned to the US and changed my job and became a Army nurse or 91C as we were called. I was stationed in several different countries for various time frames. My last joint venture was in Desert Storm as first a chief Wardmaster for the 10th MASH hospital then attached to the 3rd Special Forces as a dive medic on a shark team. Then attached to the 18th Airborne Bdg 44th Med FAST team and then reattached to the 10th SF Unit. After I returned to the US I was stationed at Ft. Rucker, Al as the assitant Chief Wardmaster and incharge of the OTSG office for Hyperbaric Medicine and diving unit. On 30 June I retired from the US Army after 26 years of active duty I moved to Mobile, AL, area. I attended the 91C clinical Specialst coarse at William Beaumont, Army Medical Center. We had a good class and I enjoyed all of the time I spent there as well as the friendships that I made there with my Classmates. We were a very close nit unit. After graduation I shipped to Germany and reported to the 3rd. Inf Div, 3rd Medical Bat Acheffenberg, Germany. Reuped and went to the 97th General Hospital in Frankfurt, Germany. I rotated back in 1976 to Ft. Gordon and was assigned to DDEAMC Dwight David Esienhower Army Medical Center. It had just opened up a year or two earlier. I attended Medical College School of nursing and also Dekalb Comunity Clooege and received my Assoc Degree. I next attended Braneu College, Now Braneu University and received my BS degree and then back to Germany. ON special assignment to a specialty team as NCOIC of a rapid deployment 150 personnel medical team. I also served as a counter terrorest instructor and was assigned to V Corps commander's office as a consultant to the commander and trained with K-52 a German Police unit assigned to respond to any terrorest incursion in the Frankfurt Region. I served on a Broken Arrow Team while assigned to Ft. Gordon after returning from my first European tour. I was also assigned to a Special Forces unit assigned to Bad Tolz FRG. ve some free time. I enjoy helping other people when they need a friend or medical treatment at the scene of and incident, Being a law enforcement officer has it's ups and downs, but the most pleasure I get from my job is helping others who are having a bad day and need a friend. I enjoy working with the children and also the college students and try to give them their space and a person they can unload their problems with. I allways let others just blow off some steam and hopefully show them that there is someone who cares. I allways try to set the example and hopefully someone will learn to do the same. I try to up lift and display a good attude every day. As of this date I am nearing retirement and am looking foward to having more time to do the things I enjoy doing but have had to put them on the back burner for a while. This will be my second retirement and hopefully my last. I am looking foward to spending more time with my family and friends. Also possably going on Medical missions with the Church and Medical personnel that I have had the privledge to work with from time to time. I hope to have more time to spend with teenagers and with the Civil Air Patrol. This will give me a time to help so many others and maybe I will learn from them also. I have lived a good life, I have traveled all over the world, met so many interesting people and had the pleasure of seeing how other people live and it taught me to value the things I have and the things from home that we take for granted everyday. Today is 10/03-2011 I have turned in my retirement papers to the State of Alabama so as of the end of next week I will be a retired Alabama State police officer. Now I can do so many things that I have put on hold for so long. I will be free to travel again and see more of the good ole USA. I will run my Gunsmith shop and take off when ever I want to. I have worked for so long that I will have to learn to relax and not wake up at 4 AM. I can visit friends that I haven't seen in years. Next week I will head to Vortex springs and do some scuba diving and just take my time and enjoy my freedom. Any of my friends who want to go Flying, scuba diving or shooting just drop me a line. I can now do more with my church and have off weekends and holiday's. It feels great to be free. John Wayne, Roy Rodgers, Gene Autry I love all animals To have patence If I won $100 million, I'd give part of it to my church, then spend the rest on friends Friends, Family and Hobby. I never attended full time because of the Military. I attended evenings and on weekends. My current age is ??. When I was 12, I thought that people my age now would be living forever. I was so completely Wrong. I own a small gunsmith shop and repair firearms for Law Enforcement departments and personnel. I also restore antique firearms My best friend would tell you I'm trustworthy, but people who don't know me very well would probably describe me as Crazy. I wear what ever I feel comforable in. I am not a fastion Buff I have a number of awards and decorations, but so do so many soldiers. Many who gave the ultament and their all for what they belived in. In 10 years, I hope to be alive and well. I'm going to get there by living and faith in GOD. My Best died three years sgo. We were in the Army together and had so many things in common including setting up a medical HBO center to treat non healing wounds. My first job was at sacking groseries at Western Hills super market, where I got paid 2.65 to and tips. What I remember most about it is learning how to save my money. The day my Mother died.
