John's Story
I was a sorry excuse for a student at Woodlawn. I was the worst kind of student there at that time. It was not that I had a hard time learning, well except for algebra, but everything else I could get. That was the problem:
I could do it but I didn't want to do it. I was the flower child of the 1960's right there at Woodlawn High School, except I had short hair, liked country music, and looked like a nerd. Although, we didn't call it that then. I can't print here nor even say it. It's against my faith to do so.
I loved to read about all kinds of things: History, political science, biographies of successful and dedicated men and women, government, sports, literature.
I was more likely to go home every weekend with an arm load of books checked out at the school library. On the week before spring break, it was the best of times as I would check out all I could hold in my arms,
I even enjoyed reading my Alabama History book and American History book...for fun! Yes, I was a nerd alright. The biggest goof ball in the place.
I supported Humphrey & Muskie for President in 1968 after Senator Robert Kennedy was killed in June of that year. I was a Kennedy ...Expand for more
Democrat not a Wallace Democrat. Never thought I would be right of a extreme liberal. I could have been labeled a Radical. My first Presidential vote was cast for Senator George McGovern.
If you had told me I would be supporting Ronald Reagan, George H.W. Bush, George W. Bush, and now anybody but Hillery & Obama. I would have thought you had lost your mind.
I really support Newt Gingrich for President as I think he really has started a movement to renew our Government and Political Body Politic with faith in God, our Legal & moral codes, and to aspire to all the good things about being an American.
Now, I know that others differ with me on this subject and this is what is so good about being in America. We all can have our say, and vote for what we think is best, and no one has the right to tell us any different.
Yes, I have learned a great deal in my 58 years. Most of it came through education, study, reading, discussing and reflecting on all that I have been able to soak in over the years through great teachers, and inspiring me to be better and do better than could have hoped for my own.
Yes, I was a sorry excuse for student but I got better!
