John's Story

Life I recently got married to my wife Hillary and live in Ankeny, IA (just north of Des Moines). We have two cats, Lenny and Squiggy (the guys from Laverne and Shirley). The above photo is of me and my friends Jessie and Neil from the national convention for Jaycees in Omaha last fall during my year as Chapter President of the Clive Jaycees (volunteer organization). We run Clive After 5 which is a Friday after work party outdoors with live band and beverages from May to August. We are located at 8500 Alice Ave in Clive, IA if you are ever in the neighborhood. I have now lived in the Des Moines area for 11 years. Hope to see you at the 20 year reunion! School My most fond memories of Danville School was meeting new people and making some life long friends. I made friends with a couple of guys in school whose lives were unfortunately cut short, but will always remember them and dedicate my page to your memories...Tony Oard and Trevis Howe. Here's to you fellas! Like the song by Green Day goes, I hope you had the time of your life! The teachers that inspired me the most were Heff and Mr. Jacobsen. Surprisingly, I am following in Heff's footsteps teaching government which is something a lot more interesting to me now than when I was younger. I often regret not going after a part in the school play after Jake encouraged me to. I have gained a lot of confidence since then and would find that appealing now. College College was pretty wild and crazy. I had some great experiences and did end up with a degree (was not sure if that...Expand for more
was going to happen for a while :)). My biggest memories are trying out for the baseball team at Western Illinois with John Geng (did not work out, but good things came from it), and going back to Iowa and getting my degree. While at Iowa, I roomed with John Mahoney and Bill Ferencevich and had some great times while there. It was two of the best years of my life being in Iowa City. I am currently getting my teaching endorsements at Iowa State and may the Iowa Alumni Association forgive me :). Iowa State has an excellent teaching program! Workplace After 10 years of working in management and sales with the Des Moines Register, UPS, and Qwest, with moderate success, I decided to make the change to teaching to go along with coaching. I was a teaching major once and regret not staying with it. I am substitute teaching in the Des Moines metro area and will end up having endorsements in Government, History (American & World), and Psychology. I work side jobs officiating most sports and tutoring. My long term goal is to have teaching be a stepping stone into being a school administrator (possibly Principal/Athletic Director combo) in the next 10 years. I also coach junior high baseball for the Van Meter School District. I have coached football and girls basketball in the past and may get back into those sometime, but now just want to focus on coaching baseball. I received some great training from Cal Ripken Jr. at a clinic in Cincinnati in Feb. '07 going with Ryan Gourley who has also been an influence on me in my coaching career.
