John's Story
After living in Ecuador for more than a year and attaining permanent resident status, I am enjoying my life here immensely. I've been able to venture out of Cuenca to some of the nearby towns and points of interest. The Andes are breathtakingly beautiful. Around every twist in the road (of which there are many) is a new vista more spectacular than the one before. The area in which I live has been inhabited for four thousand years and is rich in history and culture.
I'm learning that much of perception that North Americans have of Ecuador is inaccurate based upon out-dated information. While Ecuador is a definitely a developing nation, it is not the third-world country in the sense that many people think of. In the past few years, Ecuador has invested heavily in infrastructure development health care...Expand for more
and education. In the city of Cuenca, where I live, a new modern light rail system is being built to replace some of the buses in the mass transit system. The water in Cuenca is excellent. I drink it from the faucet and have had no problems. I have found the people of Ecuador to be friendly and industrious.
In 1980 I moved to the Washington, DC area. Beginning in 2009, I've been semi-retired doing some independent consulting working with nonprofit organizations helping them manage the risks associated with child abuse. I just finished writing a book on screening employees and volunteers working with vulnerable populations that has been published by the Nonprofit Risk Management Center. I'm continuing some consulting while I'm here in Ecuador relying on my Internet connections, Skype and MagicJack.
