John's Story
College
I finished my undergrad degree about 10 years later than most in my high school class but it's not a fact I regret much. In fact I think it worked out for the better. I had a lot more maturity and perspective to bring to my college experience as a result. The best thing that happened to me in completing my LS&A degree at Univ. of Michigan was the U.S. History course I took from a Professor Fine, a well respected historian. He was a wonderful lecturer and not afraid to inject an opinion here and there about his subjects (i.e. FDR's Japanese internment policy, JFK and LBJ's philandering, Nixon's duplicity and Reagan's harmful simple-minded solutions to complex issues). His lectures were so interesting to me that even after I'd taken both of his available courses, 1900 to 1933 and 1933 to the Present, I arrainged my remaining future clas schedules so I could sit in on his classes again, just for the fun of it. One day, during one of my "fun" visits to his class, Professor Fine recognized me while on his way into the lecture hall and stopped to ask me why I kept coming to his classes even though I'd complet...Expand for more
ed them. When I told him the answer he seemed a bit suprised and amused. It didn't seem unusual to me however because his classes were, to me, some of the best entertainment and education I experienced at U of M. Other LS&A classes were interesting and fun but Professor Fine's classes remain my favorite ones.
Workplace
When you make the decision to become an actor, which I did in my early twenties, you pretty much consign yourself to a years of different jobs and directions. That's pretty much my story. After I came to Illinois and the years began to add up I chose to start a family and try directing my creative energies in other avenues. In the meantime I'm involved in sharing responsibilities for taking care of my two boys and supplementing our income as a cashier at a Whole Foods Market in Deerfield. It's rewarding in that I'm meeting and working with different people on a regular basis and that I'm selling our customers food and health products that are good for them. There's more to do in my life than just that but I've accepted and am appreciative of what I've got and that's as important as anything.
