John's Story

Life I attended Nursery School with "Auntie Barb" Ruelke, went to Kindergarten and 1st grade at Lincoln School, 2nd grade and part of 3rd at St. Joseph's School, before returning to Lincoln to finish 3rd, 4th, 5th and 6th; then Keene Junior High (7-3 and 8-3) before K.H.S. I then spent a P.G. year at Bridgton (Maine) Academy and earned letters playing varsity football, ice hockey and baseball. I entered Northeastern University in the fall of 1968, earned a letter in freshman ice hockey and played varsity ice hockey, before leaving school in the fall of 1970. During the latter years of high school and through my years in Boston, I covered sports for the Keene Sentinel, Manchester Union-Leader and Concord Monitor. While at Northeastern, I worked for The Associated Press in Boston (covering the Joseph P. Kennedy funeral), and the Newport (R.I.) Daily News. I got into police work in Boston as a special police officer with the Boston P.D. for four years and served as a bodyguard for Teddy Green of the Boston Bruins and for Jerry Lewis for six nights on Cape Cod. I moved to Baltimore to join the Baltimore Police in December, 1974. I was in uniform for 8 months before getting promoted to Detective in the Internal Investigation Division for two years. I then worked undercover vice for two years before going deeper undercover buying and selling "stolen" property and food stamps. The last 12 years of my career, I was assigned to the Economic Crimes Unit of the State's Attorney's Office and attended President Clinton's first inauguration January 20, 1993 as the bodyguard for the Baltimore State's Attorney. I received a Gold Record from the Recording Industry Association of America for a pirated music investigation which started in Baltimore, went to Washington, D.C., Philadelphia and New Jersey before culminating in Philadelphia. The investigation was featured on the Discovery Channel. I also protected Mel Blount of the Pittsburgh Steelers, jockey Willie Shoemaker and other athletes and celebrities. I retired 4/13/95 (20+years) as a Detective, got married 4/23/95 and worked for a little over a year in the Attorney General's Office investigating Medicaid fraud. I helped provide security during Pope John Paul II's visit to Camden Yards in October, 1995. In 1996 I became a Special Agent, Office of the State Prosecutor, investigating bribery, misconduct in office and other crimes committed by elected or public officials in Maryland. As an agent, I write and execute search warrants, conduct wire taps and scrutinize bank records. My grand jury testimony indicted Linda Tripp for wiretapping (as lead investigator, I spent two hours interviewing Monica and several more body-guarding her during her court appearance)...I work undercover on many bribery and political corruption cases in Maryland and frequently travel out-of-state on those investigations. My wife Lynn (an Assistant State's Attorney in Baltimore),daughter Marissa (conceived on the way to the K.H.S. reunion i...Expand for more
n 1997, born 4/15/98), second daughter, Karen Cynthia, (born 11/10/2001), and I visit Keene occassionally. I have traveled extensively, visiting 44 of 50 states, including Alaska, eight of the Canadian provinces, Mexico, the Carribean and Argentina, Uruguay and Brazil. Marissa, 10, played soccer for four years, field hockey and lacrosse two each and plays tennis, the violin and the clarinet. Karen, 6 1/2, has played soccer, taken gymnastics and ballet, Tae Kwon Do and now plays field hockey. Marissa has taken ballet, Hip Hop and jazz dance. We have part ownership of a beach front condo in Bethany Beach, Delaware and go there every ten weeks. A newsworthy item from 2008 was raiding the home of the Baltimore Mayor in a corruption investigation and making the front page of the two Baltimore newspapers. We indicted a Baltimore city Councilwoman and a major developer on Bribery charges and then indicted the Mayor on 12 counts of Perjury, Theft, Misconduct in Office, etc. two days later. That made national news ! The Mayor was convicted in one case, pleaded guilty in another and stepped down from office on February 4, 2010. We also convicted two close associates of the Governor for election fraud during his re-election bid. We convicted a state delegate twice for stealing from her campaign account (to pay for her wedding and the salary of an employee in her law office.) After 17 years investigating political corruption, I accepted a position doing internal investigations for the Motor Vehicle Administration Police (with a brief stint as an Assistant Inspector General in Montgomery County). Now I have a take-home car with a state police radio and computer, and I start working when I get in the car instead of a 40-mile drive to my old office ! My wife is a Special Counsel at the Office of the Attorney General, still handling child support enforcement. Speaking of the children, Marissa is now 16 and Karen Cynthia is 13. Both girls play only field hockey now, year 'round, indoors and outdoors. In 2013, Marissa travelled to Spain to play, and this past fall, committed to play at Towson University, under scholarship, two years from now !! I enjoy locating old classmates and friends and would love to hear from anyone, by mail, e-mail or phone or on Facebook ! UPDATE: Marissa is now 18 and attending the University of Alabama. Karen Cynthia is a freshman at South River High School and made the junior varsity field hockey team...!! updated August 28, 2016 Marissa is now a senior and will graduate in the spring from Salisbury University here in Maryland. Karen is a freshman at McDaniel College, also here in Maryland. My wife Lynn continues as an Assistant Attorney General, and I continue as a Police Investigator with the Motor Vehicle Administration. And I have written and published a book: “Charm Bracelets” Snapshots of a Law Enforcement Life...chronicling my life starting in Keene and ending up in Maryland. Available on Amazon.
