John's Story
I retired at age 60 in March 2007. Since then my wife, Jan, and I have traveled, done volunteer work and community service.
We walked across Spain, following the ancient pilgrimage route of the Camino Santiago for 45 days. We have trekked in Bhutan and Chile and kayaked in the Sea of Cortez. We have hiked and done volunteer trail work in California on the Tahoe Rim Trail and the Pacific Crest Trail. As well, we have hiked and worked in and near the Grand Canyon.
Next up will be more walking in Spain or Latin America, and also a return to Alaska, where we spent two weeks backpacking from the Chukchi Sea to the Wolak River, and viewing the Caribou migration.

the west slope of the Sierra Nevada in northern California, not far from Lake Tahoe. We have front door access to running, hiking and biking trails and roads on the Eldorado National Forest.
I've long ago given up most of the bad life habits I learned in Pittsburgh, and we strive to live in harmony with our environment and treat the planet kindly.
I am a 'pragmatic pessimist' about the future of our species; my motto is "It's hopeless, don't give up".
At this juncture man seems destined to either cook the planet or bury it in overpopulation, however we may yet rise above the petty nationalism and other base proclivities driving our species. I'll be gone, either way.
