John's Story
College
After my stint in the Navy, I settled down in Newport and was fortunate to go to Salve Regina. I had a double major in Economics and Politics. While in school (with a credit load of 21 credits/semester), I also worked 60 hours/week with 4 to 6 jobs at one time. At the end of my first year, I had a B- average.
I worked the following summer to finish paying for the first year and managed to get in a second year. The first semester wasn't that bad, but the second semester proved to be fatal bringing my average to barely a 2.0 which wasn't enough for me to renew any hopes of getting more financial aid.
I tried to bolster that by taking an extra class from CCRI at Newport Hospital, but I barely got a C in that class (can't even remember what the one class was I took...ha ha). But the C wasn't enough to bring my overall GPA up to get financial aid for Salve. I needed a B+ or better. Needless to say, I was burning out big time which was my downfall.
During my two years at Salve, I also moved around a bit which added to my burnout. I found myself moving after the first semester, then again the summer of '89 and again after that.
Okay, so here's some of the many jobs I had between classes. Parking Lot Attendant at Bowen's Wharf, worked for a Nursing Agency (main job) going to nursing homes throughout Newport. I mainly worked at Harrison Convelescent Home on the graveyard shift. I would work there till just after 7 am and walk to school to catch Sister Ann Nelson's Political Philosophy class at 8 am. Some of you might recall the one time I lost it and yelled back at her while still dressed in my nursing whites because I was (heaven forbid) one minute late to her class. I also did Private Duty nursing and home health aid through the same agency. I also taught art, language, and cooking classes at Swinburne School of Arts on Pelham Street. I worked at a Gourmet Food Store for Professor Gavin's wife at...Expand for more
one point. And I waited on tables at the Viking Hotel. I might have missed something, but I think I got it all.
Needless to say, after a double major and all those jobs, it's a miracle I lasted as long as I could. Unfortunately, I could never get myself back on track and that was the end of my college try.
I remember faces better than names, too bad hardly anyone posts pics on classmates.com. I do remember some first names of people I used to hang out with or had classes with the most. They are: Chris (she was also an Economics major into the Rolling Stones from Bristol, RI who spent one year at Hofstra before coming to Salve), then there was Brenda (the three of us were always hanging around). I also remember a Michael Forest, and Jim (Jim was from Kenya and one of his uncles was mentioned in our textbooks) and there was also Stephanie Burke who I worked with at the Viking Hotel as well. I also recall others by face and not name.
In November of '90 (which would've been my third year at Salve), my mother passed away from a massive heart attack. I didn't have a phone at the time and I was just getting off work from the nursing home in the morning to find a note to pick up a telegram. I remember telling the ladies as I opened up the envelope, "Thank God it's from Maryland because it's from my brother. Both my parents are elderly and if it would've been from Ohio, that would've meant something was wrong with one of them." Well they knew what was in the envelope and went pale. Do I have a way with words or what? I was barely 26 at the time and devastated. I don't think I would've been able to finish the semester if I was still in school then.
And then maybe it's a good thing that I didn't finish. I wanted to be a Stock Broker upon graduation. I could've moved to New York and well, we all knew what happened in 2001.
Contact me and refresh my memory if you remember seeing me lurking around campus.
