John's Story

Life Hi! My name is John Renwick. My wife Brenda and I have lived in Williamsburg, Virginia since 2003. Prior to this, we lived in Gloucester, Virginia, where we were married in 1993. I have lived in Virginia since 1979 when I was in the U.S. Navy. I grew up in Southern California. I have three adult children from a previous marriage, Hannah, Tim, and Mary. Hannah is a recent graduate of the University of North Carolina at Wilmington. Tim is in the U.S. Army. He served in Iraq during the entire year of 2006. Mary is a sophomore in college and lives in Radford. I have two adult stepdaughters, Melanie and Becky. Melanie and her husband have seven children. My work is a major focus of my life. I am an Assistant Superintendent of a power plant of a Pulp and Paper Company. Outside of work, I enjoy walking, biking, and sightseeing. One of my goals in life is to visit all 50 states. I have seven more to go. Politically, there is only one thing worse than a Republican, and that is a Democrat. I am a hard-core Libertarian. Spiritually, I have faith in Jesus Christ as my Lord and Savior. Everything else I am not interested in. Organized religion really turns me off. Here are a few of my favorite lists: Top 5 Favorite Books: The Bible – God Atlas Shrugged – Ayn Rand The Count of Monte Cristo – Alexander Dumas The Grapes of Wrath – John Steinbeck Lord of the Rings Trilogy – J.R.R. Tolkien Top 5 Movies: Caddyshack Pulp Fiction The Graduate Monty Python and the Holy Grail The Godfather Top 5 Songs Miracles – Jefferson Starship Light My Fire – Doors Time – Pink Floyd One of These Nights – Eagles Dream On – Aerosmith Military On Watch On Board USS Arkansas during the First Few Seconds of 1983 25 Miles off the Coast of War Ridden Beirut, Lebanon By Lawrence R. steam plants are hot, The main engines are turning, Oh – shutdown we’re not! We’re still underway, and lonely and tired, And far from our lovers, and kids, and our wives, We’re thankful to God that no shots have been fired, They’re unaware at their parties that they may owe us their lives. Turbine Generators turn tonight, Two-alpha’s on lined, For this warship’s power and light Is America’s freedom defined, Two-charlie’s got coolant pumps The reactor gets cool, In my throat there’s a sadness lump, Do my kids think I’m a fool? Ten thousand miles away and snug in their beds, Their mother will cry for me and drink to my health. While I patrol Europe, Africa, Asia – the Med, And our submarines, vigilant, continue their stealth, Their sailors continue for free sea lanes and peace, Two diesel will auto start, if needed, I’m sure, And while we’re stuck out here aggression may cease, But nothing for loneliness has proven a cure. There are ten electricians, who built this ship, Ten proud nuclear plank owners, who shoot from the hip: Goerke, Mayes, and Rogacki, Ronan, and Smith, Renwick and Zera, McRobbie and Robertson, And leading the lineup on the top of the dock, Is our big power hitter: Dandy Don Hancock! As I write this log down, my eyes filled with tears, Departing for new lives after long, long, long years, So the year of our Lord, Nineteen Hundred and Eighty Three, Is the year ten electricians will finally be FREE! For college and family, for real work, and a life, To share with the women we love, our precious wives! We depart and bequeath to you our good humor and mirth, To speed this warship o’er ocean’s vast girth, And as we leave you, good friendship imparting, Remember us plank owners, Thank Heaven, Departing! “Happy New Year” and God bless you and your loved ones at home.
