John's Story
my favorite st clement memories.
around 1962, before kennedy was shot,
(you may recall the 3 bells that got us to line up for class) in the mornings.
after a heavy overnight snowfall we would yell hey- holding the 'ay' sound in the courtyard.
after a short time more of us would blend in together all holding the same note.
the vibrations from our combined voices would cause the heavy snow to fall off of the roof.
kids can sometimes be entertained easily.
the nuns would run outside panicked thinking something horrible had happened;
and this of course added to our fun.
a few years later in class, the nun teacher ( i cannot recall her name, although i don't wish to be disrepectful)
was very hard of hearing and could not see well either. someone dropped a book, quite by accident i am sure,
the loud noise startled everyone, although our leader barely noticed it. then someone else
dropped a desk lid (recall the wooden desks with pull up lids) making an even louder noise; again
our leader barely noticed. she might say 'i hear an undertone' which just egged on the noisemakers.
this type of thing kept going until one of our young ladies in class (mary ellen dugan?) said everyone
drop their pencils at...Expand for more
9 oclock, which we did. an enormous very loud echoing in the halls noise
ocured which got the class roaring in laughter our leader once again said "i hear an undertone".
someone said 'its a bird outside' and the poor unfortunate nun walked very slowly to the window and looked out.
i seem to remember she was removed from the classroom a few weeks after this: someones parents apparently
reported these goings on to the principal.
our graduating class went to cedar point in a chartered bus at the end of the year. it was quite fun. when we got back
some of the students removed the paper advertisements from the side of the buses, the drivers seemingly didn't care.
another story: in eighth grade there was a joke going around the punchline was 'pulling his pud' so everyone knew what a pud was; except our nun teachers. shortly after that the nuns got the idea of allowing their charges to pick a name for their class. there were 3 eighth grade classes as i recall. one of the other classes (not mine!) called themselves the puds: meaning people under dictatorship.
every time the nuns would refer to 'the puds' us teenagers would roar in laughter. i don't know if they ever learned what was so funny.
