John's Story

I attended Palo Alto Military Academy (PAMA) for three years (56-58) thru and around my mother's death, then onto Abbott Jr. High (59-60) after my father remarried and settled in Hillsdale, then on to Hillsdale High School and graduated (60-64). Interesting that 50+ years have passed since graduation, but who hasn't wondered where the years have gone. I somehow do not miss high school, a strange time for me, a non-sport guy, a flagging band member (trumpet), not too interested in social life, no goals particularly. I did enjoy camping and the outdoors during that period and it sort of saved my outlook on life - being in nature and all. I took college prep and didn't feel prepared for anything that followed - not the least college. I was young and didn't really know what to do. The Vietnam War was at hand, the draft, the lottery, living at home, bleak. I just missed the lottery and the draft. So now what? HHS did give me the basics, I must say, and I did graduate after all and it did set the first stage for the rest of life. After graduation, I went to CSM (64-65) for a year took engineering/chemistry/math/music/piano and was granted a draft exemption, then to California Maritime Academy (CMA) for 3 years (65-68) and received my BS in Marine Engineering, a USCG license and a Officer's Commission in the Navy, sailed for about 5 years as a marine engineer, was in the Merchant Marine Navy Reserve (MMNR) (no...Expand for more
t IN the Navy as such but sailing in the MM for my Navy Commission), did general contracting (carpentry, electrical and plumbing) for abt 5 years and then worked for a boiler company for 15 years, then back to general contracting, diesel mechanic work, oil spill pollution planning, stationary engineer for abt 5 years and, finally, a emergency planning coordinator with the City of San Francisco for 15 years. A very circuitous 50 or so year career but I was never unemployed-only between ships (jobs) and earned my MBA in Business Administration. The BS gave me direction and goal completed and the MBA made it possible to have a real applied business experience - nice round out and worth doing. In the mix, I was married and divorced twice, had 3 children (2 girls and 1 boy) and 3 step-children (1 girl and 2 boys)-all are out there on their own. I still live in my first and only house in West Marin countryside for 40+ years with my SO, am now retired, volunteer on the Jeremiah O'Brien in SF and work on my house and read. I am getting older and occasionally wonder where the time has gone. I know it has all lead me to where I am today. Overall, especially in the Bay Area, I am blessed to have had work, own a house, had a few careers (sort of) and can be fully retired at this stage in my life. My mantra is to be not too busy and not too bored. Just perfect for me and it's nice. All is well that ends well, I trust.
