John's Story
I decided early on to try my hand at doing police work. After graduating from Normandale Community College I was hired by Henn. Co. Sheriff as a Deputy Sheriff and worked in the jail for just under a year. During that time they decided they didn't like me and let me go.
In the mean time I discovered I liked to program computers and went to Brown College where I obtained my 2nd Associate degree in Bus. Admin. and Info. Systems and was quickly hired as a maintenance programmer on a dental accounting software package.
After doing this job for less than a year I received an offer to once again return to police work, this time for the city of Columbia Heights. Police departments and computers were just in the process of coming together and they thought that I could help in both areas. Sounded good to me so there I went - and there I stayed. Twenty-four years later I'm still prowling around the streets of Columbia Heights, rising to the rank of sergeant and 3rd ranking officer of the 27-member department.
On the personal front I'm still single and happy. No steady girlfriend (and no - I'm not looking for a boyfriend either for those who are curious). I recognize that I'm a pain in the ass and have found that things work best if I have limited contact with others and vice-versa.
I bought a town home in Coon Rapids. Since I don't have kids I don't need a yard, and I did enough la...Expand for more
wn mowing and snow shoveling at my parent's house while growing up that I decided to dispense with any more of that as well (another benefit of townhouse associations).
In early 2003 I went back to school at Metropolitan State University in an effort to finally obtain a B.A. degree in Computer Information Systems. After obtaining my BA in the spring of 2006, I returned to school that fall. This spring of 2009 I received an MBA degree from Bethel University.
For fun I scuba dive (several tropical trips a year), and have been doing this since graduating H.S. I hope to get back into bicycling during the summers and still belong to two local cycling clubs.
Retired from police service April, 2013. Not sure what I'll do next, but it better be enjoyable or I'm not interested.
Update 2022:
I guess it's time for an update. So....I'm still happily retired and not planning to seek work again unless absolutely necessary. I keep busy with my two dogs and leading many bicycle rides for a bicycle club during the summer months. For a hobby I’m an assistant webmaster for my bicycle club’s website and I run a website for flight simulation - developing scenery for multiple simulators as well. No pecuniary gain involved but it satisfies my computer programming interests. Also still active scuba diving except for the past two years due to covid travel restrictions.
That's all folks...
