John's Story
Life
I miss Texas. Sort of. I miss alot of things about Texas, sure, but I've been in the northeast for 21 years now! It's great living by the ocean, but it does get cold in the winter...finally bought myself a freaking snow blower after all these years of shoveling!
I'm married (second time around), two boys, Ryan is 22 and Austin is 14. Austin is mini-me, for those who might be interested! Ultra competitive, cerebral (to an extent) and kind-hearted. Wait a minute, maybe that's my wife...
My wife Hanna and I met while I was working in local TV at WPRI in Providence, I was the Sports Anchor, she was a producer. She's still producing (at another station) but hoping to be a published novelist soon and ready to give up the daily showbiz grind. I finally left local TV after 25 years in the biz when WLVI in Boston shut its' doors in 2006. I don't miss it for a second! I've stayed in TV by doing play by play for ESPNU, and hosting a syndicated show called "Inside the Big East." Chec...Expand for more
k your local listings! I'm still into radio with local and national football and basketball work, ESPN Radio, and I teach journalism at Emerson College in Boston. Me, a teacher! I hate it when they call me Mr. Rooke. I prefer Professor Rooke. ;-)
I've also embarked on a second career of sorts, as a development director (fundraising, marketing, PR) for a local children's charity, A Wish Come True. It has been very rewarding, helping kids who suffer with life threatening illnesses realize their dreams. I've also been a Little League/youth baseball coach for 19 years, and figure I must've been a late bloomer...because I'm a much better coach now than I ever was a player in the '70's! Hanging around the cage covering baseball all these years must've rubbed off somehow.
Feel free to drop a note...I've managed to stay in touch with several friends from days gone by, and it's alot of fun to catch up and reminisce...and tell lies that get bigger and better by the year. Right, Big E?
