John's Story

A short version of a more-or-less ordinary life: After HS, I went to RCC for one year, and then somehow ended up at Moorhead State University rooming with Scott Boie. After graduating from MSU (now MSUM) and for the most part surviving the late 60's and early 70's with most of my brain cells intact, I did a year with VISTA (the "domestic Peace Corps") in Bismarck, ND working with a Native American training center. Back to Minnesota and a short, but happy career as a freelance photographer. Back to MSU to start on a graduate degree. Never finished the degree, but did find a wonderful person who became my wife (and has remained so for 39 years as of this summer). After getting married I ended up in healthcare administration (kind of in a roundabout way), with an emphasis in Human Resources. Worked at two hospitals in the West Central part of MN, then to Rochester due to my wife's transfer, where I did contract recruiting for Mayo and other healthcare clients. Then to Minneapolis, again due to my wife's transfer, where I started work with RSM-McGladrey an accounting and consulting firm. We then headed back to Rochester in the early 90's due, this time, to my transfer with McGladrey. In 1999 I joined Mayo in their HR department after McGladrey wanted me to transfer back to Minneapolis. I was an administrator with the Mayo Clinic Health System. I also teach HR courses for Saint Mary's University three times ...Expand for more
a year. I retired from Mayo in 2013 and worked part-time as the executive director of the Zumbro Valley Medical Society. I left that job in July '16 to concentrate on my beekeeping/honey business which has turned to an almost a full-time job, but I love it! In the meantime, I received my Master's degree from the University of Minnesota. My family consists of two wonderful, bright, and talented daughters. Our oldest, Emily, is married and has our two grandkids, Oliver and Anna. My youngest daughter Sarah married a wonderful Irish doctor in 2013--they live in Rochester and are parents of grandkid #3--Catherine. My wife, Lucy, has worked for B. Dalton/Barnes & Noble for 36 years. She started out as manager--thus the moving around--but has worked as a regional merchandiser for last 10 years and has been fortunate enough to have her office at the Rochester B & N. She retired in January '16 Somewhere along the line I got interested in biking, and did a number of long distance bike trips. Then a co-worker convinced me to run a marathon before I turned 50, which I did when I was 49 completing the Twin Cities Marathon. I ran my 14th and last marathon in NYC in 2009. Among other hobbies, I raise bees (yes, I sell the honey), and chickens. I am pleasantly surprised that life has turned out really well. Not that there hasn't been some dramatic moments, but overall I'm feeling good about things. September, 2016
