John's Story
I left Emmett to go to college at the University of Oregon. After several years of bouncing back between Eugene and Emmett and struggling to pay for school, I graduated with a degree in journalism and stayed in Oregon. I spent three years in Seaside and except for a year that I worked for a paper in Kennewick, Wash., I have been in Roseburg, Ore., since 1993.

Outside the office, I officiate high school football, basketball and softball games. I've worked two state championship football games and a softball championship. I've also served on a volunteer committee that oversees publication of a quarterly magazine for high school referees.
