John W.'s Story
Life
Currently writing fiction in semi-retirement. I was born in Chicago near Wrigley Field, and when I was in middle school my family moved to New York. I attended Irvington High School where I was fortunate to be able to take computer programming, Latin, Spanish, and French. After graduation, I returned to Chicago to attend the University of Chicago (originally as a science major!) and then Loyola University of Chicago. At the University of Chicago I met my future wife, Elizabeth, played varsity soccer, and refereed intramural athletics. My wife and I were married in 1981. I completed my doctorate in 1993 at Loyola University of Chicago, with a dissertation on Tacitus and Roman Law. er consultant, while teaching part-time as an instructor at Loyola, and then full-time for one year at the University of Illinois at Chicago. From 1995 to 2005 I taught at Iowa State in Classical Studies and directed the Foreign Language Learning Resource Center there. I next taught at Xavier University in Cincinnati Ohio. I retired from Xavier, but was encouraged to return to teaching, so from 2011 to 2018 I taught High School Latin at Walnut Hills in Cincinnati, and fulfilled my hope to "pay back" Mr. Maddaloni for the wonderful experience I had from him when I was at Irvington. My wife still teaches, and I spend most days writing. You can find the fiction I've written on Amazon. She still teaches and we've now finished writing 9 Latin books together.
