John's Story
Life
I have fond memories of my days at West High.. Especially the Concert Choir and ROTC. ROTC really helped me when I was in the military. Concert Choir was my favorite class. I was on the Alumni Christmas Tree in 1982, which was a celebraton of West High's 100th Birthday. We had another Alumni Christmas Tree in 2004. It was so much fun. A company called "Remember When" recorded the music and made a DVD that came out like it was produced in Hollywood.. Yes, It was that GOOD!!!! I love to sing and I still do. Oddly enough, my voice has held up. I do Karaoke twice a week, sometimes three. I still live in Colorado.. Lakewood, specifically. I am single and have never been married. I guess it wasn't in the cards. I retired from the Federal Government on September 28, 2006. Now I work for myself as Tax Consultant.
Military
I joined the Army at 19. Back then, There was a selective Service System, whereby you were given a number which told you whether or not you were going to be drafted. My number was pretty low, so I was going to go, I left for the Military on April 29, 1968 and got out on April 23, 1971. My Military service was a positive experience. During boot camp, my ROTC training came in handy, there were times that the Drill Sergeants were called away and they asked me to drill the troops, since I already...Expand for more
knew how to do it. I was first stationed at Fort Carson. I was a mail clerk there and 10 months later I was transfered to Hawaii, where I spent two of the best years of my life. In Hawaii, when I went to process in, the clerk noticed I knew how to type. They needed a person who could type. He talked to his Captain and I was immediately assigned to them. They literally stold me from the company I was assigned to as an administrative clerk. I loved it. I did that for a year, when I heard about a job as an Administrative Clerk in one of my Friends office. I talked to the Colonel there and was assigned to them. My duites were to pick up Classified messages and route them to various division offices. My hours were 4 AM to 11 AM. I finished all my work by 8 AM, so the Colonel, who now was a General, told me "Tresco, get out of here", so I had the whole day to myself. Only bad thing was that everyone else was working, but I made the most of it. I saw alot of the Island of Oaho. In fact, I went to all the Hawaiian Islands, while I was there. The only Island where it occasionally snows is the Big Island Of Hawaii, but it didn't snow when I visted. But during the Monsoon season, it sure rains alot. I left Hawaii on April 22, 1971 and went to the Oakland California Transfer Station. I signed out on April 23, 1971.
