John's Story

School Auburn High School was probably the easiest time of my life, although I didn't know it at the time. I remember taking really hard classes my final semester, classes like weightlifting, jogging, and home economics. At least I was in fit shape for basic military training. Lunch at Auburn High could be likened to a class in basic social behavior. The boys pretending not to notice the girls and vice/versa. Who had time to eat? My favorite class in High School was Speech; what teenage boy could resist signing up for a class with a gorgeous teacher - I even learned how to speak publicly. My best friend during this time was Charlie Mugler - this guy was unbelievable; he worked nearly full time at McDonalds and managed to get good grades to boot. Way to go Charlie!!! College College is a good place to get started in life if you're unsure of what you want in life. I'm glad I spent 8 years juggling college and a full-time military career, but in the end a good work ethic is really what employers want. My hardest classes were all the remaining courses I needed for graduation - I guess I had exhausted all my energy and dedication to school. Military Master Sergeant John G. Walker graduated from Auburn High School in Auburn Washington on June 12, 1982. Following graduation, he enlisted in the United States Air Force where he completed Basic Military Training and attended the Aircraft Armament Systems Specialists Course at Lowry AFB, Colorado. Afterwards he was assigned to the 32 Tactical Fighter Squadron at Camp New Amsterdam the Netherlands, where he worked as a Weapons Load Crew Member on the F-15C aircraft. In 1985, Sergeant Walker was assigned to the 13th Fighter Squadron, Misawa AB Japan where he took part in establishing F-16A operations through a CADRE assignment. While at Misawa he spent numerous months building the maintenance infrastructure needed to support effective military air operations at an installation that had not supported an active fighter wing in over a decade. In 1986 Sergeant Walker was assigned to 314 TFTS, at Luke AFB Arizona, where he was promoted to the position of a Weapons Load Crew Chief; maintaining the newly acquired F-16C aircraft. Once again working in a CADRE position, he applied his previous experiences in building up a maintenance section and was a significant contributor in achieving squadron functionality within six months. In August 1988, Sergeant Walker was assigned to 35th Fighter Squadron, Kunsan AB Republic of Korea where he performed Weapons Maintenance duties on the F-16C...Expand for more
aircraft. During this period Sergeant Walker contributed immeasurably to the “Excellent” rating received during an Operational Readiness Inspection and Nuclear Surety Inspection by testing all 24 assigned squadron aircraft weapons systems thereby ensuring a 100 percent nuclear system pass rate. In 1989 Sergeant Walker was assigned to the 18th Fighter Squadron Eielson AFB Alaska. Here he initially worked the A-10A aircraft in support of nearby Army ground operations at Fort Wainwright, but was moved to the newly forming F-16C squadron utilizing the new night fighting technology of the BLOCK 40 upgrade. During this period Sergeant Walker performed the duties of weapons flight maintenance trainer and performed acceptance inspections on squadron aircraft. In 1992 Sergeant Walker was assigned to the 78th Fighter Squadron Shaw AFB South Carolina. Here he performed Weapons Load Crew Chief duties and was a critical player in the transition from BLOCK 42 to BLOCK 50 aircraft. Later he was selected to represent the squadron as their Squadron Lead Crew Chief working in Weapons Standardization Section. Ultimately, he was promoted to the position of Weapons Academics Instructor for the entire 20th Fighter Wing at Shaw, where he completely redesigned the curriculum by implementing emerging electronic instructional media. Following his promotion to MSgt, Sergeant Walker was assigned to the 79th Fighter Squadron where he performed Weapons Maintenance NCOIC duties. In October 2000 Sergeant Walker was transferred to his final military job position at the 56th Equipment Maintenance Squadron Luke AFB Arizona. Here he performed Production Supervisory duties and worked numerous armament issues making the 56th EMS Armament Flight the best in the USAF; he credits his success to the Outstanding NCO’s and Airmen serving with him. Sergeant Walkers’ military education includes the NCO Prepatory course at Misawa AB Japan, NCO Leadership School at Elmendorf AFB Alaska, and the NCO Academy at McGhee Tyson ANG Base Knoxville Tennessee. Sergeant Walker is a 2002 graduate from Embry Riddle Aeronautical University and has earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in Professional Aeronautics. His military decorations include the Meritorious Service Medal with one oak leaf cluster, Air Force Commendation Medal with one oak leaf cluster, Air Force Achievement Medal with one oak leaf cluster, Air Force Outstanding Unit Award with 4 oak leaf clusters, Air Force Good Conduct Medal with 1 silver oak leaf cluster, and the National Defense Service Medal with 1 bronze star device.
