John's Story
Nicknamed "Speed" while at Vivat! Wasted my time in class, as I learned through absorbtion reather fron studying and played 2 years on the 1st 15 rugby team for the school. Found out, when I moved on to the U of W after matricualtion (had to retake exams for both Latin and French) that I had never learned to really study. Almost flunked out my first quarter at U of W. Took me 2 years to bring my grades up to a 'C' average (so I could get back into college again if i wished), after which I joined the US Air Force. Went through "boot camp" at Parks AFB, CA, then went for training in Air Traffic Control at Keesler AFB, Biloxi, MS. Upon graduation after 18 weeks, was assigned to Itazuke Air Base, Japan where I was a member of the Base, and far East Air Force swimming teams (backstroke). Came back to Maguire AFB NJ to Aircraft Operations, and their base swimming team, narrowly missing selection for the Olympic tryouts at Detroit, MI . I was intent on getting out of the Airforce after my 4 year commitment was over, but my boss talked me into applying for the Airmens' Education and Commissioning program. I had learned how to study by this time (a long painful proces...Expand for more
s) so applied, and was accepted as a candidate for Data Systems and Statistics Officer, a 24 month scholarship at Arizona State University, plus OTS and tech school. By the time my commitment from accepting this program was over, I had 9 years in service and only 11 more to go for retirement, so stuck it out. Was stationed at Hamilton AFB, CA, Ent AB, CO, TanSohnNut AB in Vietnam, Whiteman AFB, WY, and finished up my 20+ years at Whiteman AFB, MO. After retirement from the Air Force, I held various computer positions with Blue Cross of Cleveland OH, Johnson Space Flight Center, LA, Equitable Shipyards, LA, Mississippi Ammunition Plant, MS, and Snohomish County, WA, before branching out and becoming an independent consultant in the field of personal computing in the North Seattleand Everett areas. I fully retired in 1998, and moved back to Louisiana. Hurrican Katrina, in 2005, was more than I bargained for, and while I still loved Louisiana, the people there, and their culture and food, I moved to the Phoenix AZ area, where I am today. It's been an interesting trip, and one I wouldn't mind repeating, but we live for the future, so that's where my sights are set.
