JOHN H DEFORD JR's Story
"Anyone that I may have hurt or made them feel badly in school through any of my words or actions, I want to say that I'm truly sorry.
While at Laurel Jr High School, was a starter on their two county soccer team champions and the Captain of our wrestling team champions. At Laurel High, was a starting defender on the varsity soccer team. Was a number of the LHS 1971 wrestling team State Champions. Also lettered in spring track my sophomore year being apart of their 440 and 880 relay teams, along with doing Long Jump and Pole Vault. After getting enough credits to graduate, decided in December 1972, then left school to attend Salisbury State College. Lived on campus in the Choptank Coed Dorm, room 6A5. As a freshman Lettered, was a starting defender on their varsity soccer team. Wrestled on their JV squad my freshmen year only. Sophomore year just concentrated on studies an soccer for the Seagulls and classes. During a couple summers lived in O.C. while working for the Yankee Clipper Hotel and at Ponzetti's Pizza on the boardwalk.
An acquaintance of ours introduced me to my better half, Jean in O.C., a Howard High girl. In 1976 we married at the First Baptist Church on 5th street in Laurel, Maryland. We lived at the Whiskey Bottom Apartments in Laurel that first year until moving to Columbia. We moved in to our home in 1978 and still here in Columbia, Maryland today. Our family grew with daughters, Jessica (1983) and Jennifer (1981). Well, it has became official that we have crossed over from parents to grandparents. Our youngest has given us our first grandchild in 2020, who's name is Hope.

smates, during my travels around my travels over the years. Had been thinking with all the traveling, on when to retire. So it became time to move on to the next step and retired at the end of December 2018.
Began playing soccer at Laurel Junior High in 1967 and that love for the game continued through my adult life with Columbia's neighborhood teams through the Parks & Rec Dept.. Decided after playing in to my late sixties it was time to but my cleats away after the winter season of 2019. Have not missed playing, now it's watching or attending DC United and U.S.A. National Team match’s. Will a attending some of the 2026 World Cup USA match's. Now, what will be next for me, Golf? Don't know, no patience for it yet.
Had a medical issue pop up on me in 2006. Being informed by my urologist that I had cancer and was referred to Johns Hopkins Hospital. Went to Hopkins for their opinion and to see what all the options that were available for me. With a very aggressive form of prostate & bladder cancer that invaded my body, the treatment option shown survival option rates from 10% less than 50/50 to live another ten years. Bladder and prostate removal has a 90%+ survival rate of ten years. The best choice for me was take the odds, did the surgery in July 2007. My latest blood testing and checks have been looking fine for me in 2021.
2008, I started working on my ancestry to find and connect with relatives. Have worked on it through out the years and found many cousins around the country and Lithuania. Funny note is finding that I have 7 other half siblings, three other brother and four sister of my father and all have different mothers. One of my Lithuanian cousins living in the states in 1999 and I found that they live in Georgia, fifteen minutes from my oldest daughter's residence.
In 2025, my 2006 cancer has shown it face and has returned. Finished my eight weeks of daily radiation treatments to halt the advance and hopefully kill the cancer cells. Will know more in March 2026
