John's Story

Life After Memorial, I went to work at the Chronicle. This was followed by a stint with Southwestern Bell and the United States Navy. I returned to Houston in 1969, enrolled at the University of Houston, got married in June 1970, had my first son in January 1973 and graduated in May of that year. My second son came to me in 1978 and my daughter in 1980. After graduation I went to work at Shell, followed by Tenneco, Petroleum Engineer International, and finally Gulf Publishing Company. I stayed there 14 years first as sales manager in the book division and finally as director of the division. The company was sold and basically disbanded in 2000. I now run Wilson & Associates. e technical editing for various energy companies. College The first time I attended UH in the fall of 1964, I went to night school while I worked as a copy boy for the Chronicle. It was not a good combination, and I flunked out. I got back to school in '69 after a tour of duty in the Navy. I started at a junior college in Florida to make sure I understood how college worked. After a year there, I got back to UH. I worked for the Chronicle reviewing rock and roll to supplement my GI bill. I ended up editing the Daily Cougar and having a great time at school. I made some lifelong friends, and I love going back on campus even today. My oldest son got his MBA there. So, how cool is that?
