Johnathan's Story

Life Well, it took a lot longer to graduate from CU-Boulder than I thought it would, but that was because I changed my focus from Business to Cultural Anthropology. That decision was to expand my horizons exponentially. I went to Osaka, Japan on a study abroad program and decided to go back after graduating University. The next 6 years were spent living in Japan teaching English. During my vacations I traveled all over the country and then starting venturing out into other nearby lands. During one of those trips I became enamored with scuba diving and ended up moving to Phuket, Thailand to become a diving instructor. When the tsunami came, I was lucky enough to be on a liveaboard cruise boat as the diving tour leader. We were warned in time to get out to deep water and thus we didn't notice anything catastrophic. We canceled the rest of the trip and headed home. The area of Phuket in which I lived in was relatively untouched. My house was quite a ways from the beach and so suffered no ill effects. The drop in tourist numbers however was devastating to the local economy. After weeks when by and the tourists didn't return many people started getting desperate. ff my credit cards for a bit I realized that I needed to go back to Japan to work and save up. Spring 2007 Update: Well, things turned out pretty much as I anticipated. I'm back in Japan now, teaching English. However, my contract is up in a couple of months and I plan to return to diving--most likely somewhere in South East Asia, maybe Bali or Cebu, or maybe even back to Phuket to get back into the swing of things. I haven't figured out exactly where I'm going yet, but I'm tired of Japan and ready to get back to the beaches. January 2008 Update: I'm back in Phuket, especially because I gained about 45 lbs. in a single year. It's slowly dropping off now, but I'm sure glad to be active and diving again. Well part of the time anyway. I'm working for a Japanese diving company. They have a liveaboard diving boat from which we do 4 and 5 day cruises. The M/V Scuba Explorer is a really nice boat, one of the finer ones in the area. Whenever we have non-Japanese customers I go along as a translator/dive guide. The rest of the time I'm in the office or at home teaching myself how to build web pages and market over the internet to try and get more English-speaking customers on the boat. I have to admit, I'm happy to be back in the tropics with cheap and delicious food, cheap beer, and good diving.
