Johnny D.'s Story
Life
I spent 4 years working as a truck mechanic, then another 20 years on active duty in the U.S. Army. I married in 1989 but it didn't last long. I divorced in 1992 with no children. I left the Army in November 2002 and returned home to San Antonio.
After a short time re-adjusting to civilian life, I started going to school and have since earned an AA in Business Administration from Northwest Vista Junior College. I continued as a full-time student and earned a BBA in Accounting from TEXAS A&M University, Kingsville - System Center San Antonio. Why stop there? I started graduate school in Fall 2009. Once again, I am a full-time student, but now studying for a Masters of Business Administration degree from Texas A&M San Antonio.
School
High School was fun. Had many learning experiences from band, soccer, auto shop, and girls. Wish I hadn't been in such a hurry to go to work.
I volunteered to organize the 25 year reunion of the John Jay Class of '78 (October, 2003) in order to re-establish connections (outside of family) in San Antonio. I had such a good time that I volunteered to help Lydia with the 30 year reunion as well.
For pictures from the 25 year reunion, please go the "JJHS Class of '78 25 Year Reunion" photo album posted in my John Jay High School group. For pictures from the 30 year reunion, please go to the Tim Steven's Class of '78 website.
College
Right out of high school, I moved to Dallas and, while holding a full-time job, worked my way through trade school earning a diploma in Automotive/Diesel technology from Lincoln Technical Institute. I didn't started taking real college courses until after trade school. I managed to get in a few courses by attending night classes at the local Dallas Community Colleges.
I joined the Army in 1982 and went to Europe. While on active duty, I intermittently attended University of Maryland classes during my off-duty hours. I attended classes at many duty locations (mostly in Europe). In 2000, I earned an Associates of Arts in Management Studies from the University of Maryland - Overseas Division.

l almost from the beginning because I was obliged to fulfill the required lower level business curriculum. I earned an Associates of Arts in Business Administration from Northwest Vista Junior College, graduating in 2005 with honors qualifying for membership in the Phi Theta Kappa International Honor Society for the Two-Year College.
I went on to enrolled as a full-time student at TEXAS A&M University, Kingsville System Center / San Antonio where I earned a BBA in Accounting, graduating in 2007.
I am at it again, I started school in Fall 2009. I've returned to Texas A&M San Antonio, but this time for a Masters of Business Administration.
Workplace
After high school, I worked as a diesel truck mechanic in Dallas for a few years. My work consisted of removing, rebuilding, and reinstalling Allison automatic transmissions for trucks and heavy equipment, but there had to be more to life than the undersides of trucks.
I wanted to see more of the world, so I joined the Army in 1982 for guaranteed duty in Europe. I spent the next 20 years working in all sorts of jobs in the Army's version of the Communications and Information Systems Management field. My Military Occupational Specialty (MOS) job title was "Telecommunications Center Operator". It's OK if you don't know what exactly that means, neither does my Mom & Dad. I tell them I worked with computers.
I left Army active duty in 2002 to become a full-time student. Being a full-time student is a lot of work, however I enjoyed my time as gainfully "Unemployed Student".
Military
Each assignment was an adventure. I had a chance to live in the east and west of the continental U.S. plus the bonus of living and exploring Europe for 12 years. Each duty/location had its up's and down's but I tried to focus on appreciating and enjoying the good things each duty/location had to offer. When it came time to get some real R&R (Rest and Relaxation), I'd always return home to San Antonio for a nice visit with family.
After 20 years of active duty, the time and opportunity to reach for a new goal was at hand. In November 2002, I retired from active duty to realize my new goal of earning a Bachelor's degree by attending college full-time.
